The only thing my mam and dad sleeve agreed on was their hatred of Thatcher.
He was a copper in the Spalding area and was a massive local celebrity. He was also a huge (literally) budgie breeder. Spalding Tulip Festival was the biggest even in the town every year nso the perfect chance for Geoff to get his budgies out. So to speak. Was a very well publicised fact, I seem to think it was mandatory to mention in any interview or profile along with him being a copper
He grew up in Holbeach just outside of Spalding. I never met him in my 12 years living in that area but I believe he was/is a top budgie breeder. My landlord when I first moved to Spalding knew him but wasn't his biggest fan.He was a copper in the Spalding area and was a massive local celebrity. He was also a huge (literally) budgie breeder. Brilliant thread. My mam hated the bad boy renegades too. Add to those 3 Eric Bristow (she liked John Lowe) but she loved princess Diana. My mam had a dislike for the ‘bad boys’ of sport, particularly Alex Higgins & John McEnroe.
And she didn’t like Boris Becker cos she saw him pick his nose on court once
She really really didn’t like Diana Princess of Wales.
Me dad was usually asleep in his chair.
They brought it back last year. This years event is the weekend after nextHe grew up in Holbeach just outside of Spalding. I never met him in my 12 years living in that area but I believe he was/is a top budgie breeder. My landlord when I first moved to Spalding knew him but wasn't his biggest fan.
It's a shame the Tulip festival got cancelled it was a good days entertainment, I was only in the area for A couple of them before it got cancelled and it was a good excuse for young lads like I was back then to go on the drink all day, not that I needed much of an excuse to go on the drink all day back then on a weekend .
Come on Tim!!Nana hated Tim Henman. And I mean HATE.
Not an 'irrational' hatred, obviouslyThe only thing my mam and dad sleeve agreed on was their hatred of Thatcher.
I didn't realise, that's good news for the area. I moved further South 6 years ago. They brought it back last year. This years event is the weekend after next
You could be describing my old fella there. Had completely forgotten about this! Hated him. Likewise, think it was probably because he had cheapened the (usually grown up) Parkinson show.My Dad could not stand it when Rod Hull and his Emu were on TV
He would say ‘Oh not this idiot’and nearly went berserk when he was on the Parkinson show
Not sure it’s irrational though!
He was nearly indirectly responsible for my wife’s death, when she was eight she met him and he gave her an autographed poster. For some reason on her way home, to keep her hands free as she did a cartwheel she put in in her mouth, as she did the cartwheel the poster hit the deck and the result was a tonsillectomy of sorts. She ran home with blood coming out of her mouth and unable to talk she couldn’t tell her mam what had happened. The story creases me every time I think of itHe grew up in Holbeach just outside of Spalding. I never met him in my 12 years living in that area but I believe he was/is a top budgie breeder. Saw the writer Vince Powell interviewed and he was adamant that the subtext was to undermine racial intolerance. Unfortunately this message didn't make it to the playground, whereas language like "n**-n**" did. And his claim to be an early social justice warrior probably wasn't helped by the all you can eat stereotype buffet that was Mind Your Language.Love Thy Neighbour is a bit of a conundrum.
On one hand the language and phrases used are obviously very uncomfortable viewing. It could never be shown now.
But on the other hand, the story lines did shine a light on the madness of bigotry and racism. Eddie Booth was certainly never the hero of the show, or portrayed as the good guy. He was shown up as a fool in every episode.
Also, I think it was the first prime time show with a black actor in a leading role. He himself believes it was an important show, with a valid message which has been lost.
That's euphemism of the decade and the competition's now closed. She had met Geoff Capes at the Spalding Tulip Festival (he was displaying his budgies) and he had been really nice to her.
So did half the people on this board. There were whole threads dedicated to the subject. My Mam used to really dislike CJ on eggheads.
I don't win many board awards, in fact I think that is the first time someone has given me one. That's euphemism of the decade and the competition's now closed.
