5th Test, Oval

I think this highlights England's problem going forward. The batting is relatively sorted under the new regime as long as you can accept the odd rash shot and the occasional cluster of wickets. The bowling department looks very sparse. We lack a quality spinner so much so I think unless we're playing in the subcontinent I'd stick with Root. Anderson is looking less threatening whether due to age or wicket preparation I'm not sure. Broad retired. Stokes not fit enough to bowl. Wood and Archer can't stay fit enough to play one or the other for a full series. I hope I'm wrong and I'm just not aware of what's being produced on the Counties' Conveyor Belt of Talent, but it doesn't matter how many runs you score or how fast if you can't take 20 wickets.

We have managed to take 20 wickets in all but the first test as it stands, but the issue now definitely seems to be about fitness. It’s been a gruelling schedule, all to accommodate the bloody Hundred. Am surprised Tongue has only played once and I would have given the young leg spinner a go in one of the Tests. As for the rest of the squad Potts is a decent option and Robinson is Broad’s heir apparent. Will Jacques is a batting spinner and has played a Test, he’s probably Ali’s successor. As for the counties, I only really follow Yorkshire and Fisher was in the Windies with England last year, but again he’s injury prone. The leading county wicket takers are all 30 plus, so the England age groups are probably the place to look? Of the rest Archer and Stone are always injured.
