Abbreviating Stephen or Steven to mere 'Ste'

I find this one a bit weird too. Is it pronounced Stee? Of course we have our very own permanently-on-loan Ste Walker.

Was it Steph or Stef(f) that all Stephens or Stevens who were trainees at Boro used to be called.
As in McGargyle etc.

When the hell did this happen? What's wrong with Steve? Shocking.

I wish to be referred to Brian or Br only now.
Agree Ste is just lazy.
I can’t refer to you as Br mind either, it makes me feel cold and want to put the heating on. I’ll call you after the rest of your name instead, Ian

The only person who ever called me Ste was my older brother when we were kids and he only did it to annoy me because he knew how much I hated it.

I usually go by Steve. I could be a Ste, Steve or Stephen but I still have a few friends who insist on addressing me by my surname! .. how many options do they want!

I only really became a Steve when I went away to uni. Before that all my mates just used my surname with a 'Y' on the end of it. I'm still Stephen to my parents, and some of my ex girlfriends insisted on calling me Stephen too. I'm Steve to everyone else these days.

Is it a Teesside thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it mentioned anywhere else?

Also, is it pronounced ‘Stee’ or ‘Stay’? I always assume it’s pronounced ’Stay’ whenever I see it.

Do you feel the same about all shortened names with letters that aren't in the original word?

Danny, Mike, Bill, Bob, Nick etc?
Not really, TBH. they can do what they like, If someone called Michael decided they didn't want me to call them Mike then that's fine.

Although I bet the majority of people with those names haven't spent their entire lives with people spelling their name wrong (in its full form), though...

Here in Leeds there's loads of 'Ste' lads knocking about.

It always seems like it's the sort of abridged version that you'd see preceeded by a description of some sort too. Kind of like; "Who told you?" "I heard it off Fat Ste, mate. In the pub." Or, "You won't believe what Mad Ste has gone and done now..."
