Akpom - Sheff U

Something which really stood out to me during The Ashes was how people are ready to complain bitterly about something before it actually happens. People saying we've lost on day 2 etc, in tests we went on to win. I think there's a lot of this going on here, if we do sell Akpom for £8 million pounds, then by all means everyone pile on, but maybe we look a bit daft bellyaching about something that hasn't actually happened and hopefully won't.

I don’t want to sell him as I think he’s worth more to us than someone else in no small part because of this.

But you’re not really factoring in your big if. “if he has another season like the last one”. Which he might. But he might have one like the several before and revert to being worth sod all. And then we’re paying 60k a week for four years for a player whose value has gone.

Both scenarios must be possible. We’ve seen both in the past. None of us can know which will come to pass. He’s a gamble. I think he’s more likely to stay on his current path here where it had really clicked, so I think we should try to keep him and he should try to stay. But not at literally any price.

Yeah but look on he bright side, if we do offer him a bumper pay day and he stays and reverts to the Akpom of previous seasons, then most of the "give him what he wants" lot will then be able to have a rant at the club for paying over the odds for a one season wonder.

It's win win for them.

Why would he revert to the Akpom of previous seasons when his position changed for the first time last season into a deeper role? Are we moving him back to a centre forward?

For all sorts of reasons. The same reasons that say Rudy Gestede once scored 32 goals in a season for Blackburn but then never scored more than 10 in any other season.

But thats nothing to do with Akpom and his new role. He was converted to a 10 and thats his position now. Why would he suddenly start playing as he did as a 9?

Well Gestede was playing the same role across all of those seasons so how do you explain that ?

You really think that simply because no one had the foresight to play Akpom as a number 10 before that that's the key to unlocking a 20 goal a season striker ? There's plenty of players who've had one good season and never repeated it, why should Akpom be any different ?

If our fans are expecting a guaranteed 20 odd goals from Akpom in a season simply because he'll still be playing as a number 10 then I feel like we may have a lot of disappointed fans.

Feel free to hoof this if he does, but history would suggest that I could well be correct (although of course I hope I'm not).

Keep scrolling down that there Wikipedia page matey. Best season 2014/15 he scored 22. He was at Blackburn in the years 2014 and 2015, but that was over two seasons.

This is what I'm looking at, but as I say my point remains irrespective of the number of goals.

Not sure why Gestede has anything to do with it.

You said Akpom could revert to the player he previously was when played in a different role. Why would that happen when he isnt playing that role

I am not expecting Akpom to score 20. I hope he does. He was the key to most of our positive displays last year ln the role he had. Lose that and we are nowhere near the team we were last season. Pre season has demonstrated that.

I’m not really into d*** measuring so wont be hoofing a thread to make a point where all I asked what evidence is there to demonstrate why Akpom would revert to the performances he had as a centre forward when he is a number 10 now?

Because irrespective of position he still has not scored many goals in previous seasons - simply moving his position may not prove to be a magic unlock to turn him into a 20 goal a season man, or it may - who knows?

Can you not understand that there are plenty of one season wonders, and understand the point I'm making, and that Gestede is an example of a player who played multiple seasons in the same position but didn't have the same success across those seasons - Akpom may or may not be the same.

The 2014/15 refers to the two years he was at Blackburn. He scored 10 goals in the second half of the 2013/14 season, 22 in the whole of the 2014/15 season. Like I say if you scroll to the bottom of that page it gives you the season on season figures of his whole career.
Also, to compare Akpom to Gestede is like comparing Mozart to Mantovani, Messi to Maguire and Michelin starred to McDonald's.
