The stats speak for themselves…the kids got a bright future.1 goal and 3 assists in just 150 mins of football!
Good first half of the season though and overall not a bad first full season in his career.
Gilbert has had one good match against a team that had largely checked out for the summer.
Hopefully they can both kick on next year.
Love itHere's Carrick's opinion on Alex Gilbert, quoted on the opening page of today's Match-Day thread, from his most recent Media Conference:
Alex Gilbert. What's his future?
Trying to carve out the career in a game is not easy you know....sometimes you can get thrust in an opportunity ....and the door opens and you kind of stay in the team, or you have a real trajectory... you create goals in one direction [whilst] other times it can be a bit more challenging. It's not meant to be easy to play at this level and Alex you know he's wanted to play more football he's been desperate to play more football, more minutes on the pitch, he's had to be patient he's had to train well he's had to learn a lot as well. Credit to him for that the way he's gone about it, and he's had a good impact for us recently so....he's looking to finish the season on a high, and you know he's definitely moving in the right direction in terms of improving all the time.

I wouldn't sign him permanently, but I've said before, if Greenwood had come through our academy and was playing his first full season for us, we'd have an entirely different perspective on him. We'd have raved about him until December, then sympathised with him since then.
People's need a scapegoat, he's been our main one this year.

I wonder if he had come through our academy he would have shown more because he has played like a loan player. Somehow a bit detached, often a bit moody which reflected in his performances. I have no doubt he has talent but his application is concerning.I wouldn't sign him permanently, but I've said before, if Greenwood had come through our academy and was playing his first full season for us, we'd have an entirely different perspective on him. There’s a thread from last year and won’t hoof it to spare those that made comments like “can’t be worse than Rogers” “Another Kieran Scott masterpiece” (sarcasm switch on), “loan to Hibs and never to be seen again” etc etc.I don't think anyone said that about Gilbert, that I can remember.
He was definitely described as a failed signing, including by myself, as he cost nearly £1m as a first team player and has barely played at all, even when the squad was down to bare bones.
Nobody saw enough of him to even judge his ability.
This is nothing to do with scapegoating anyone. It’s more to do with he’s had a real bad spell of form since December really so it does feel like he was over used and on the evidence yesterday and his recent cameos Gilbert looks a real good player.
I just would have liked to seen a bit more of Gilbert and a bit less of Greenwood in the second half of the season.
He wasn’t performing well
I fully agree with you regarding
Gilbert and Greenwoods form since December, but though you personally might not have scapegoated him, plenty of other people have. There's been a malicious streak in the criticism of him which has been way over the top for a young lad pla ying his first proper season.

But Carrick has dropped him now which could be a sign that he is getting frustrated with him. Or he may just have run out of steam I don't know. Whatever I doubt we will retain his services,.Without wanting to derail the thread again there is a borderline hatred of Greenwood from some which I just don't get (as I said above coming on loan from Leeds "if he isn't good enough for them!" doesn't help) - regular comments about his appearance, attiude, lack of interest etc. Goes beyond form/performances which even Greenwood I'm sure would be disappointed with. If there is any negative body language from him I read it as frustration that he hasn't had a great time since xmas (and has actually been quite unlucky in some cases - hitting the woordwork / close offsides etc.) rather than lack of effort. Carrick has spoke well of him recently and I don't think would stand for it if he wasn't putting the work in.
I still think whether we sign Greenwood hinges on two factors, if Leeds go up or not and his basic wage. Also how is he in training in terms of listening and improving, do the coaching team think there is improvement in there with him?But Carrick has dropped him now which could be a sign that he is getting frustrated with him.
