Andy Preston brain fart

Playing devils advocate and ready for some pelters on this, I think what he was suggesting was:

Whilst someone is waiting for their asylum claim to be processed they can undertake work in return for healthcare, accommodation, legal support, etc... and keep 20% of what they earn in cash terms. Instead of the current state where they are not allowed work and only live on the small allowance provided. It insinuates they could then contribute to the society they want to be a part of and maybe give them a bit more dignity than the current system does.

As ever his tone and delivery are devoid of detail and nuance similar to his tenure as mayor

I actually agree it would be a good thing to allow asylum seekers to work - I'm sure the vast majority want to, and others seek out work illegally as they can't get by on their allowance in any event. However, what's the 80% tax rate all about?

Still sounds abhorrent.

I am sure there are plenty of tories out there who would love to set up workhouses and take 80% of these peoples' wages off them, plus a hefty amount from the tax payers as well.

I think he’s saying we shouldn’t have to pay them because we’re already housing and feeding them.

When is cotton picking season?

Simply dog whistling the racists again IMHO. I sent Mr Preston what I thought was a considers reply!

What a dreadful person you are. You are essentially promoting modern slavery where we deliberately treat people less favourably purely because of their skin colour or social standing. Next we will be sending ships to Africa to bring some more of them cheap black folk back to pick our crops from the fields. Asylum seekers want to work, pay taxes and pay rent. They can’t because the broken asylum system with its huge backlog prevents people from working until their application has been approved. The government need to stop spending hundreds of millions on crackpot schemes like Rwanda and instead invest in processing applications. Investigating how applications for asylum could be made prior to arrival in the country would stop the boat crossing far quicker than any Rwanda scheme. You have shown your true colours here. A man who abdicates we treat the most vulnerable and disadvantaged less favourably than the most affluent is not someone I can respect or have any time for and you should never be allowed near public office again

The bloke is an idiot.

Maybe a more sensible approach would be to allow asylum seekers to work with an emergency tax code, the same as UK residents do. They could then claim back the overpaid tax if asylum is granted.

Let’s not forget that included in the deportation arrangements, until someone in government says absolutely that they are not, are Afghans who assisted British forces. Also victims from other countries who are proven to be victims of torture. I have a friend who was a crisis therapist before she retired. Among others she dealt with torture victims, abused children and other stuff most of us would run a mile from.

I don't mind a bit of avocado so I'll have a bit of this.

It's still a stupid idea because even if you think it's moral (which it isn't), it is completely unworkable.

They could be paid 110% of their wages, it's still against MDS laws as they are forced to work under threat of deportation and will be agreeing under duress.

This is the bit I don't think Mr Preston understands.
