Another nail in the coffin to m'bro town centre shopping

well it sounds like a lot of things ARE actually happening…

*STACK - street food, bars and a performance stage under the A66 flyover next to Exchange Square.

*Level X - as Captain Cook Square is transformed into a regional entertainment hib, this superb new centre will include karting, indoor golf, bowling, food and bars.

*The Muddler - top-quality pan-Asian Newcastle restaurant opening its new branch in the old Wicker’s World/Kalininka bar opposite the station.

*Spot White - the popular pool and snooker hall has lodged a planning application to open a new late-night venue on Linthorpe Road just across from Swatters Carr.

*The Wired Lobby - it’s been long in the making but this exciting e-sports centre includes high-end gaming, state-of-the-art PCs and consoles, SIM racing and tournament arenas.

*Popular bar Dovecot plans to open a new bar in Captain Cook Square serving high-end drinks from around the world plus state-of-the-art golf simulators where you can play any world-famous championship golf course.

how much of that is he enabling and financially supporting / subsidising and how much is he just attaching himself to for personal kudos?

Lets just wait and see a) if it's actually delivered, b) if it's done to the right quality or on the cheap, c) is profitable and successful, before any back slapping occurs. So far the guy has been an utter failure as major

Yes and all very welcome. BUT - where is the local input? eg Stack should be great but it could well replace Orange Pip - with its local bars and local stalls etc. Also the owners are acquiring the Base Camp building - but will they be interested in bands, exhibitions, talks, all sorts of events that were hosted there for and by local people.

If you live in Middlesbrough please take a little time to give some feedback and say why you do not want cuts that will decimate so much of Middlesbrough life https://www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/op...ay/lets-talk-about-middlesbrough-consultation

Preston has been an abject failure as Mayor as far as I can see. All photo opportunities, no actual improvements.
I am a friend of Andy and litter pick with him and the good people of Middlesbrough Community Champions every weekend. This is not personal but just that I am really worried that the cuts will be devastating. I would really urge people to click the link and make contact opposing the cuts. I am seriously worried that Culture and Events will be decimated - and services for young, old and vulnerable will leave thousands in a dire situation. https://www.middlesbrough.gov.uk/op...ay/lets-talk-about-middlesbrough-consultation

park at wood street. Cheap parking and a 5 minute walk into town. Plus added bonus of seeing some amazing street art ;)

Sounds overly negative to me, due to him wearing a blue tie rather than a red one?

Why not celebrate new businesses and entertainment venues in the area?

I think it was a bold move by M’bro to acquire both captain cooks square and hill street… it enabled them to move remaining retail to Hill St and facilitated the plan of making Captain Cook square a purely entertainment area…

This is something I think you were advocating / hoping for in your previous post? But when it is actually happening, your response is “yeah, well, let’s just see if it’s successful eh?”

It's a healthy skepticism based on the fact that he's talked bollox in the past

When they are there and of the desired quality, I will. Until then I will remain skeptical that any transformed Middlesbrough centre projects will be another Ski Slope or Super-casino project.

My response was lets see if it happens, if it happens as described, and if its run properly, because once bitten, twice shy. I've just given you two promised schemes that failed to happen, and there are plenty of others in the past that didn't.

The shops will move to where the money is - Waitrose is a good test - nearest one to Middlesbrough is Durham? then York? then Newcastle?

Income and wealth inequlaity have both increased a lot since 1979.
I regularly walk past my local Waitrose on the way to Aldi.

You’re comparing restaurants and venues that are well underway and due to open in a matter of weeks / months, with a ski slope pipe dream that never got beyond an artists impression.

They are being opened by established and experienced operators. They’re not doing it for a laugh. They are opening here because they believe it will be a success.

Have a wander around Captain cook’s square and exchange square, you can literally see the progress and judge for yourself.

I'm stating wait and see the finished article, if it's what is promised and if it stays open. Seen it all before to be honest, lots of promises, but little delivery. I'll wait before any backslapping

Not going to lie, I didn't even know it was free to park there, I've always just went to Cleveland Centre because it's closer to where I want to be.

I think that the future is in independent retailers - something like Wembley Boxpark? A mix of restaurants, shops and activities...

I went to Boxpark for the Senegal game when I was in London early Dec and I thought it was outstanding, same with the Stack in Newcastle. I just don't think something like that lasts in Middlesbrough.

I was in Dubai 2012 ish and they effectively stopped building shopping malls and moved to a different kind of experience that was along the lines of Box park wembley. They knew back then that the game was up for traditional retail spaces.

Interestingly the Waitrose in Eldon square is shutting.
The one in our village has just been refurbed.
