.. :ROFLMAO: ... I've been meaning to get one for some time so I did.

I'd been listening to Eddie Vedder's 'Ukulele Songs' lately and I thought sod it, I'd give it a go myself. Had always wanted a proper one. Bought one for a girlfriend years ago but have myself one now.

I've played guitar since I was a kid, was in tonnes of bands ... then went and got a years master performance at West London Uni in a guitar school linked to it and have kinda gotten sick of guitar lately, especially since lockdown and the lack of musicians coming together, venues closing, how things change in a year or so ... grrrr .. seems such a waste ... just find myself at home when I can play going through the motions tired and uninspired. Need to start making use of it again.

Just got the Uke today though ... wonderfully relaxing to play, this one is way louder than I expected just on it's own. The case is lovely too I got with it, well chuffed, lovely looking thing.

Perhaps I'll start myself a solo act with my Uke once local gigs become more of a thing again, I'll get myself a show somewhere :ROFLMAO:

There was a uke thread on here not so long ago. I seem to remember upsetting a few people on it. Can't stand the bloody things myself but glad to hear that you're having fun with it mate.

I dunno where you are but there's a reasonable music scene on Teesside for all levels.

If you're passing through Redcar on a Tuesday I run an Open Mic in The Halt on Station Road.

If it's a Wednesday I help out at the Open Mic in the Gypsy Rover.

Both are very welcoming and we have Uke players fairly regularly (one's about to go off to a Conservatoire which sounds very posh).

Crack me up, you Bumface :ROFLMAO: (y)

Another shout for The Halt from me. We played one of their original nights recently and it was the best gig we’ve done in a long time. There’s an undercurrent in the local scene at the moment where it seems to be which hands you shake rather than what you have to offer, The Halt seemed to be outside of that.

I go back years mate, back in the early 00s DIY punk rock Boro scene/DIY gigs, and years down the line various guys went onto doing Open Mic nights at the Dickens, Normanby, all over the place. Fair to say I was heavily involved in a lot of musical events locally. All of my friends were in bands like the Beatlemaniacs etc. My friend Johnny worked with them and ran Open Mic nights everywhere for a long time, he runs stuff at the Cavern in Liverpool now ... glad to see its getting back on the go again. Love it how anyone can just turn up and join in ... dread to think of the number of nights I have been up and done things half-cut .. I don't sing .. can do some harmony etc but always just been a guitar player mainly.

I know The Halt, was invited over not so long back to check it out. I know Pete, lad who runs the place. Absolute top fella, known him years.

I am definitely going to swing by and check stuff out at some point. Been a while since I've been out and about ... fancy getting the guitar out and forming a function band or something but it's so hard these days finding folk with the time .. half the drummers I knew have all done their backs in or something like that, everyone else barely gets an hour of their own time spare to commit to playing in a band again.

I'd love to form a proper band too but around here, I wouldn't know where to start now as I've been out the game so long. There's all sorts of interesting genres coming out of the Teesside scene I've heard which are so talented. I just want to try lend my playing to anything I can really.

I am definitely going to swing by The Halt soon. Way I'm speaking it sounds like I'm in my 60s or something haha .. I'm 35 .. but as I said, finding the time to get something going is hard.

I'll turn up somewhere with my Uke and give a few things a shot, have a few beers thrown at me :ROFLMAO:

Ah right. Obviously I know Pete - he's alright I suppose :ROFLMAO:. I also knew some of the Beatlemaniacs way back when - not close but nodding terms; friends of friends sort of thing.

I've been messing around music-wise in Redcar for a decade or so but rarely venture further afield - used to have health issues and haven't had time since I got sorted.

I've tried putting a band together a few times as I have a bunch of songs that I've written over the years - always comes to naught. People!

I eventually recorded a few at a studio and they're on Spotify etc.

The open mics are decent - virtually no egos involved so it's all very much "after you", "no after you".

If you're in the Halt and there's music on then I'm normally around - except Sundays when I'm over in the Pig.

I look like the bloke in my avatar picture - feel free to say hello.

Which band are you in?

I've been along to them all and they've been great - especially the one I played at  - they put me on first which I think means I'm the best...:ROFLMAO:

Finn Forster, Elizabeth Liddle and local legend Lewi "picture is up at the train station" Collins are on this Thursday from 8pm-ish.

Free entry (in case anyone else is interested).

Open mic on Fridays upstairs in Twisted Lip too.

You can call yourself Cosmouke

Brilliant album that!
Eddie is one of my all-time heroes ... also as a kid, I remember it wasn't cool to like Pearl Jam ... It was Nirvana and the rest of the Seattle underground scene that was cool .. I loved it all though, didn't care. Then I became a metalhead :ROFLMAO: , shredding the likes of Pantera/Slayer ... had myself a Randy Rhodes Jackson V with a Floyd Rose .. divebombing guitar solos like Dime himself, he taught me so much as a player ha ha ha

But Pearl Jam have been timeless to me. Had two tickets to see them in Manchester a good few years ago and had to sell them, was absolutely gutted I couldn't make it. Still haven't seen Pearl Jam or Eddie live to this day. That will have to be sorted soon.

Tell you what is another brilliant record Eddie did, the songs he wrote for the soundtrack to the film of Into the Wild ... awesome film about the story of Christopher McCandless AKA Alexander Supertramp .. student who dropped everything, money, possessions the lot to go and live in the wild .. thoroughly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it before. Really emotional film I connected to in a huge way, had me tearing up at the end. Eddie's music in it really makes it a masterpiece in all ways. The song 'Hard Sun' always gets the hairs on the back of my neck up.

Mudhoney are one of my fave bands too from that era. Interestingly, I got to meet Kurt Cobain's closest friend Dylan Carlson (Guy who owned the shotgun that Kurt apparently blown himself away with! For what it's worth I don't believe he killed himself) Anyway .. when I went to see Dylan's band Earth a good few years ago, was awesome to meet him, a super friendly bloke, so lovely. He was sat next to me eating sausage and mash in the Cluny :ROFLMAO:, felt so surreal. Such a significant part of musical history sat right there, was dying to ask him all sorts of questions but out of respect just said hello, obviously. His band was absolutely superb, one of the best live experiences I'd ever seen at the Cluny. Can't wait to get back to nights like that again ASAP

Really sorry to hear of your health issues, friend. Hope things are on the up and you can play more out and about.
It's hard forming bands I guess, getting the right folk together doing what you have in your head if you're fussy like me. But other than that, it's always healthy to keep playing live with others even if it's just in a pub/function band. Playing with others live is what makes you better.

I will have to check out what you've recorded mate.

I've been more interested in soul/R&B/hip-hop guitar styles these days. I've got a friend in Newcastle who has something on the go with some really talented guys and wants me to lend a bit of guitar when they're ready .. so guess that is something to look forward to. It's the kinda thing I'd like to do, session work I guess mostly.

Yeah, guys at open mics are always cracking lads and great to anyone who gets up and gives something a blast. The more of these nights that start again around the Boro etc, the better.

I will say hello if I'm ever in the Halt and buy you a beer, have a craic and a moan about Boro's latest fk up on a weekend :ROFLMAO:

I went to college etc with the Beatlemaniacs lot, the brothers .. cracking lads and musicians. Was really good friends with James the drummer, remember the days of Leos in Redcar when we'd go there and drink until 3AM the night before college 😁(y)

I play Uke. What kind did you get mate?
I am not an expert on Ukes/brands mate .. it sounds lovely and has a lovely case with it. I'm guessing it's just a basic one, but it stays in tune and the wood seems very nice.

Believe it or not, it was given to my Mother as a gift, she runs Spinal Injuries at JCUH and one of the staff gave her this as he has a few, and as he knew she had a son who plays guitar, he said he would like to give her this to let me have and play ... still can't believe it. How generous ... never even met the guy, don't know how to thank him. Mother is buying him a gift in return ...

Anyway, she delivered it today and I said I'll look after it and get into playing it. Feel like I don't deserve it but he insisted ... what a lovely thing to do. I've always wanted to play one so here we go. This is the closest match I could find of it on search but it is a better quality wood than this with a hard case and fur inlining.

Decent enough to start out on, I guess???

Is Mark still running the open mic at the Gypsy Rover?

I've played there a few times with my mate but we haven't tried the one at The Halt yet.

We used to play regularly on a Wednesday night at the Ship in Guisborough.

I bought a Uke a while back. I bought the concert Uke as the ordinary one was a bit small and fiddly.
It was my thread that Bumface was refering to earlier :ROFLMAO:

I'm utterly $hit but it is strangely addictive. I've learned Staircase to Devon (why wouldn't I) and some 12 bar blues. I've been looking around for a Uke group to join (There used to be one down here in Pontecarlo but I think it went by the wayside during lockdown)

Funnily enough I watched Into the Wild again (maybe for the third, fourth time?) recently and posted on here about it. It's a brilliant film, very sad, but also with a very real message too.

Plus probably the best film soundtrack ever too - it's an album that I still listen too from time to time and one I never tire of.

He's a talented fella for sure.

Excellent film, relate to it too much, to be honest 😜

Definitely one of my fave movie soundtracks. Excellent.

Was it directed by Sean Penn??? I may be wrong but I think Sean and Eddie are friends and work together a lot on movies.
