I don't think we have had anyone better than him post relegation under Southgate. However with defenders I would also include Pearson, Cooper, Zeige (probably missed a few).

That's right, it was one of the reasons mentioned for us going down if I remember.

Actually having looked at that their appearances per season, they are pretty similar too. Bit surprising as Ayala is so often joked about as missing Feb/March as he didn't like the weather, but I suppose Dale misses a month or so most seasons too it seems.

I was only young at the time but I don’t recall Ziege playing as a defender for us. I always thought he played more as the left side of a midfield diamond or left midfield.

Ziege was an out and out wingback who was born to play in a wingback system with 3 x centre backs

As an orthodox full back in a 4 he was meh and he wasn't really dynamic enough in terms of agiity to play as a left sided midfielder to a top class level

Wand of a left foot though, his corners , free kicks and crossing was as close to world class as you could imagine, half decent right peg as well
