I know we're all nostalgic for Ayresome but let's admit it: the Riverside was the right choice and Gibson got it right.

The ground right (at the time) but the location wrong.

Wasn't that the TDC lie to tempt everyone into thinking it was a good idea to run down the town centres in favour of an out of town development?

I don't think the location is wrong.
By the river Tees, with a view of the transporter and not that far to walk from the town centre ( despite the complaints, most away grounds are at least that distance from their town/ city centre).
What let's it down is the lack of development around the site, that was promised but not delivered.

Gibbo was promised housing, restaurants and the tall ships centre.
the biggest issues were not moving the Chemoxy plant to Wilton or some other location and the channelled access from town due to the A66. The whole area will always feel separated for as long as we have the 66 cutting the town off. Plus, who wants to live in touching distance of a major chemical plant?

Yes, there was talk of a stadium behind the cinema etc.
Better.off where we are, as others have said.
