That's not relevant though because part of the attraction is that he DOES have a deep connection with the club.
 
I think he’s a great cb in a certain style of play. In other circumstances it would be an absolute no brainer to get him in on a free, but not given our current squad.

Feels a bit like Wheater, the timings never worked out for a return.
 
Gone downhill a long way since he left us.
Even if one of the 4 CBs we have leaves I would promote the young lad who debuted in last game to cover injuries.
If we had to replace one I would look for a player from L1 or L2 or European Div2s to come in
 
We’ve got 4 centre proper halves? I guess we must have a youngster to come in and as a last resort could have howson again in there or even smith. Fry smith, lenihan and probably Clarke all have injury records that don’t fill you with confidence but even so if we play 4 at the back we have enough.

It’s relevant if we are thinkning about footie ability.
Take your point tho - it’s not the only factor for SG’s club.
 
He's no better than any centre back currently at the club and we're not a club who can afford to pay five specialist centre backs. If we have injury problems we have options including Smith (or Ayling if he's here) subbing in, as can Howson or even Engel in dire straits plus we've retained Hannah so that looks like we've kept him for crisis situations.

If Lenihan can't recover or we lose another centre back for some reason, then we would need a 4th choice one and he would be an option but, let's face it, he'll have long since moved on to another club. 2 years ago on a free he would definitely have been a really good choice but now that time has gone.

For clarity i'm only taking Gibson if we were to lose Lenihan. I wouldn't take Gibson on top of the four centre halves we already have.
 
Gibson's best time form for us was also when we played incredibly defensively. Playing in Carrick's current system Gibson would get very little midfield protection and would be exposed time and time again.

Top Boro lad but don't think a return would work out

yes, good point, isolated he would be roasted. He worked best as part of a very well drilled and organised unit, with a double shield in front, that's not our philosophy now
 
Personally dont want him back. He could do a good job for birmingham city if they fancied him.
 
He was awful in the 2nd leg against Leeds, has no pace and his positional play was dreadful. He was good for us for a couple of seasons, but he had so much protection in front of him, made him look better than he was, got found out at Burnley and been at best average for Norwich every time I’ve seen him play. He’s a lower half of the champo player now at best
