Bill Gates: Solving Covid easy compared with climate

No really I'm just struggling to understand what you are having a pop at Mr. Gates about? For example something becoming a "rare treat" is not the same as it becoming unavailable.

As you say leaving his land to his children (I assume he has some? I've no idea) is not unreasonable. Encouraging people to limit reproduction to reduce our impact on the planet, reasonable. Move to greater consumption of plant based diet, logical. Etc.

I don't follow the "don't listen to a hypocrite" line. Greta Thunberg recently sailed across the Atlantic to attend a climate conference rather than fly because of accusations of hypocrisy instead she was met with choruses of "why isn't she at school" and other less repeatable stuff. Can't argue with the message (but don't like it) attack the messenger. Hardly a new tactic. As Mr. Moggie depressingly demonstrated on the 5th post of this very thread.

If you don't agree with the message make your point.

I've always found this interview during Microsofts Antitrust deposition a good insight into the man. You get some real insights into the real Bill Gates, not the cuddly uncle persona his media team have him playing out. He comes across, as an arrogant, lying, narcissist. I find it strange that people on here who would normally lambast a man with his track record of overt capitalism and corporate monopolisation to be held in such esteem.

The man built and ran a behemoth corporate tech company, whose carbon footprint on the world will have had significant consequences for the state the planet now finds itself in. And we are now supposed to listen to him, when he spouts blatant hypocrisy in our faces. The bloke couldn't have caused more environmental damage if he tried.

Watch the video and see what you think. I think he comes across terribly.

Where?

Where has anyone said anything about his character other than yourself? I've no particular feelings about the man he is flawed and greedy, many people are. That doesn't make the message about climate less true. Why not address that?

The message about climate change is correct, but I won't be taking the lead from a man who has caused a lot of it. He's like the 60 year old drug dealer who suddenly finds God, hoping to cleanse their soul and conscience for the destruction their life has caused.

I mention his character because I don't want to take climate advice from a cnut.

So head in the sand or follow the lead of someone else, like say Greta Thunberg?
No I'd rather listen to people like Wallace Broekner or John Mitchell. Scientists who are leaders in the field of climate change. Thumberg and Gates are neither, but we need celebrity faces these days so the idiots listen

Can you point to the differences of opinions between them then please?

I can't find much about him online. Is there anything in particular I should read?
He's published probably hundreds of reports and journals on the subject since the 70's. You should be able to find plenty if you do enough digging. I think he used to advise for the Met Office too

Where have you heard him speak? Any videos? His publications cost a lot of money to read.

John FB Mitchell

There's an example. You can read a lot of his reports for free. I can send you some if you are interested? I have only heard him speak on TV, but have read some of his stuff over the years. He used to often come on the news to be interviewed on climate change, but I've not seen him on there for years. He's considered one of the greatest minds on the subject

Thanks!

Frightening that global warming estimates have increased so much since he published that 14 years ago.

Crazy isn't it. If you want to read more of his work or the work of other scientists, then use Researchgate. It's where lots of scientists share there reports, many of which you can read without being a member

Thanks I've read that paper and I can see why he is an important voice in the debate. However, we need high profile campaigners as well. Now fair enough for several reasons, some logical, some less so, you discount Bill Gates. Yet what he says does not vary from the science supporting the propositions advocated by Thunberg or Gates. I think you need as many voices on this as possible. In a sense I believe COVID has shown us a path to reduce the western usage of fossil fuels by increased home working and reduced travel. Can we grasp it?

I hope so for the generations to follow us.
