Black Sheep Brewery in Administration....

Like a lot of older breweries they haven’t really moved with the times. If you’re not actively getting new stuff out there and onto the supermarket shelves, and on YouTube to be reviewed by “influencers”, you will struggle.

At the very least they should have brought out a "zero" beer for a fast growing market. Marketing is everything these days.

I think Black Sheep has done that. Maisie Adam endorses their beer. You can buy it direct and from loads of retailers.

They haven't been sitting on their asses, it's very tough out there.

Must admit I am a bit confused by the difference now beer wise between Theakston Brewery and Black Sheep brewery. I know the former was bought by Newcastle and Scottish at one time but it was subsequently bought back by the Theakston family and is independent again. Black Sheep is also owned by the Theakston family but a separate independent company brewing almost side by side.

That’s a shame, It’s my old man’s favourite beer. You don’t see it in many boozers these days mind, there lies the problem.
I was going to post the same, you don't see it about. We're awash with decent beers these days, every town has a brewery but the customer ages are getting higher and their capacity for consumption shrinking.

Are they relying on supermarket bottle sales?

I believe one of the Theakston brothers fell out with the family and decided to start his own brewery....hence the name Black Sheep, the black sheep of the family....

Wasn't that over the sale of Theakston to Scottish and Newcastle?

Perhaps Theakstons can take over the ownership of Black Sheep Brewery, the family have overall control of Theakstons. Perhaps that has been the reason for the current situation, who knows?

Rubbish. They are one of the most active ‘local’ breweries that I know of. They are bringing out a new beer every month, it’s all over their socials, they have Maisie Adam endorsing it, you can buy it in nearly every supermarket, they have beer, cider, lager, stout, spirits, they sponsor big events, they have 2-3 beer festivals every year, a nationwide reputation for quality, physical pubs dotted all over Yorkshire…. They really have moved with the times.

BUT if anything I think the focus on moving with the times has cost them. I always worried when they bought the York Brewery brand and pubs that they didn’t need to do it, they should have stuck with what works. The 5 Barrel Project that sees new beers every month was originally just a few a year. Maybe they have been spreading themselves too thin. Not sure owning their own pubs is the answer either when the hospitality sector is on its backside.

Someone will come in, buy it, sell off the pubs and reduce the range. It’ll soon be back profitable again.

Not saying they’ve done nothing, but they must have gone wrong somewhere? It’s not as if beer is a dying trade.

Didn’t say they weren’t active, I said they didn’t have enough new stuff in the supermarkets and on YouTube, that’s where the money is now whether you like it or not. Maisie Adam’s profile was nothing until about 6 months ago, I quite like her, but it’s not as if she’s especially well known!

Call it rubbish if you want but their brand hasn’t moved with the times, if it had they wouldn’t be bankrupt, it’s pretty simple really and has happened to loads of breweries.

As I said, I think the brand has moved with the times. They have just spread themselves too thin. They should have concentrated on the core products And forgot about owning pubs and coming up with new beers every month.

Their price point on the new beers is bonkers too - you can pay over £4 for a can. They need volume of a few products to bring the price down and make it more profitable.

You are suggesting they didn’t have enough new stuff in the supermarkets… The new stuff wouldn’t sell as they can’t produce enough so it is extortionate.

People will pay £4 for a can of high strength stuff that isn’t like everything they’ve had before. But if you’re pitching at that level you need a very good product, which it can only be assumed they aren’t producing if it isn’t selling enough. Or their branding isn’t reaching enough demographics. It’s no good spending a load of money on marketing if you’re still only reaching 60 year old CAMRA enthusiasts who are well aware of all you do.

Their core product will survive, but as I say, it will be owned by one of the big 3, the recipe will be modified to make it more profitable etc.

Can't believe the price of some if this Brewdog stuff in stubby cans,I don't think it's worth it personally....
