Blazing Saddles

There was a rash of RWNJs praising Blazing Saddles, saying "they'd never make this nowadays", "politically incorrect", etc. apparently blithely unaware that it is a satire on racism! Richard Prior was co-writer on it and was to have played the sheriff but the studio wouldn't touch him.

Stupid is as stupid does.

First time I've seen this film in years, certainly the first time since I saw Django Unchained which, for my money, does a sharper satire of the same issues as BS. Maybe that's my perception because I'm less familiar with the types and styles of films that BS satirises.

However, the RWNJ argument objection carries no weight: DU uses the same language as BS.
You could argue that DU can get away with it because it shows some of the horrors of slavery, as well as mocking the KKK, but the "they'd never make this nowadays" is nonsense.

I think mocking bigotry can be very tricky on screen though. I remember listening to an interview with Warren Mitchell a good few years ago, where he confronted a nazi-type who had told him he loved that show where "you have a go at the c**ns". Mitchell laid in to him, stating that the show was really attacking the bigots.

What I see as the problem is that a character such as Alf Garnett probably did owe his popularity and viewing figures to bigots, even if those involved with the production thought they were being high-minded and challenging bigotry. I'd hate to think BS remained popular just because some like to here the N word thrown about.
