Boro v Man Utd - 6th round FA Cup 1970

Great post never seen the TV coverage before, Was at that match and the West Ham cup tie as well which was a marvelous cup tie .... Downings diving header from a Hickton cross a sublime goal . I was only 12 at the time so sketchy memories ... Hicktons deft chip was the highlight. Seeing Best Charlton Morgan grace Ayresome Park was a thrill although they looked well out of sorts most of the match as George Smith and Eric mcmordie bossed the midfield

Enjoyed this cup tie on YouTube - a packed Ayresome Park, Boro playing out of their skin against Man Ute with Bobby Charlton & George Best. Unfortunately lost 2-1 in the replay at Old Trafford.
A Cracker...
"Willie Whigham the absolute idol of the North East"???!!!

I can remember queuing with my cousin in the cold from about 5.30 for a ticket for that game. I will have been 8 and he will have been 11, can you imagine doing it that now?

Ahh happy days, I remember queuing overnight for tickets for that match. We gave them 2 really tough games that year.

Was in the Scoreboard end for the replay. Boro were magnificent and the crowd played their part. The "Come on Boro" drowned the home support all night. 16,000 Boro in a crowd of 63000. It all changed when Brian Kidd felled Bill Gates with a right hook . They scored the 2nd after that, but Boro pushed for an equaliser right to the end.
Great night shame about the result.

I was also in the same queue Norman. I was 6 years old and promised a ticket for the match by my older brother if I waited with him I remember getting up at 5 o clock with snow on the ground and waiting ages in line until we finally got to the front and I got my two tickets which my brother took off me .I never did get to see the game 😞 our kid took his mates or his girlfriend

I was at the replay as well.... Boro unlucky not to get a result in the replay. As mentioned poor Bill had a broken jaw

Got as far as Hickton's goal. Marvellous. And it conveys the AP atmosphere well. That sliding tackle on Best and the roar that went up from the crowd. Remember he had scored SIX in the previous round.

If only Tyne Tees had saved a copy of the 3rd round tie vs. West Ham.
