Boro v Marseille Thread

Tonight`s opposition:

Marseille are one of the strongest sides in France, and finished as runners-up in Ligue 1 last season, 15 points adrift of champions Paris St Germain. That secured automatic qualification for the group stages of the Champions league.

They kicked off their pre-season preparations with a 3-0 defeat to Championship side Norwich City last weekend, with their trip to Teesside preceding further friendlies against Real Betis and AC Milan.

Managed by former Croatia and Juventus midfielder Igor Tudor, familiar names in the Marseille squad include former Arsenal duo Saed Kolasinac and Matteo Guendouzi and ex-West Ham winger Dimitri Payet.

Colombian forward Luis Suarez - not that one - joined the club from Spanish side Granada earlier this week.

Chuba Akpom on his start at Middlesbrough and differences between Warnock and Wenger

Chuba Akpom netted two goals in his first two Boro games and has had a solid start to life on Teesside

Chuba Akpom believes Middlesbrough is the perfect place for him to be.

The striker joined the club from PAOK this summer after spending two years out in Greece.

And he netted two goals in his first two games for Boro to make himself an instant hit, with some solid performances since to add.

Admitting the move come at the right time for him, he says the ambition of the manager and the players matches his own, making Teesside a great place to play right now.

Akpom told the Football League Paper: "I just thought it was the right time to come back. I was there for two years and it was a lovely experience but when an opportunity like this came up, I couldn’t say no.

“I could not have wished for a better start. This is a good environment, there are good people here and so it is a perfect place to be

“Middlesbrough is a Premier League team, it’s all about getting back there,” he added.

“It’s clear that if you don’t have that ambition then what’s the point?

“You always have to fight to be the best you can be. It’s the aim for all of us.”

Middlesbrough might not have the strongest squad in the division on paper but they've looked hard to beat so far this term - losing just the once in a tight opening game against recently-relegated Watford.

Manager Neil Warnock has instilled organisation and belief into his players, which appears to be working wonders.

The Boro boss has plenty of experience of promotion, but he isn't the only experienced boss that Akpom has worked under.

Coming through the youth ranks at Arsenal, the 25-year-old got to work under legendary boss Arsene Wenger, but says he and Warnock are polar opposites in their approach.

“He (Warnock) is a massive character," Akpom said. "He can lift the whole changing room with what he says and the way he says it but he also has another side.

“They are complete opposites (Warnock and Wenger) but both great.

“The gaffer can come and have a normal conversation, not just about football but about life in general and have a good laugh.

“You forget he is a manager. He is a top human being and a top person and that sets him apart from other managers.”
