Callum Kavanagh

Would like to see him get a chance he does always seem to score for the u21s and he has been for a few seasons. His loan spells haven't gone to plan though have they. Hope he doesn't end up like Harry Chapman

same age llike Evan Ferguson.. these 2 a future of Republic Ireland striker..look how E.Ferguson worth now..just try and unleash his potential..can save Boro million..

There's obviously something holding him back. Scores goals regularly at youth levels but struggled a bit out on loan, had a few injuries. Isn't in the Ireland u21 squad. Never really been in and around the first team despite his goals. Would be interesting to hear what Carrick thinks of him.

He looks very slight still, I think they will be hoping he fills out over the next year or so. He’s still a boy. He clearly has talent and there’s plenty of time for him yet.

It shows the massive gap between youth and professional football.

I'd love to see Kavanagh succeed, only 20 years old, still got plenty of time.... but he was loaned out twice to League 2 and was average at best. He's definitely not good enough for our bench.

I reckon there's only a very short window for a young player to step up to Championship standard; maybe less than a season. When a player is good enough, like Fry, Tav, Hackney it is immediately apparent they they have made some sort of jump in ability and have what it takes. You get players like Coburn who might make the grade but stuff happens, usually injuries or a loss of form at just the wrong time that prevents them from kicking on.

It's possible Kavanagh has had that jump in his ability in the last few months. Thing is, there also needs to be a match between the team and player. I think the nearest equivalent to Kavanagh in the first team is Forss. Both players don't do much up front except score goals and we've seen that the second Carrick had a replacement for Forss that Forss never got a sniff of being centre forward again, even when he was the only fit one we had. See also Muniz last season; Carrick would have rather put 10 players out then put Muniz on the pitch. So I don't see Carrick turning to Kavanagh ever. Same with Hoppe. They don't seem to have what he wants in a centre-forward.

The U21 league is a really low level. All the best players in that age group are out on loan or in first team squads. The overage players, if there are any, are only there for fitness. The difference in physicality between playing against kids and adults is huge and that is the difficult thing about stepping up so even the standout players will struggle. We had the issue last year with Balogun who clearly had talent but was very weak. I'm sure they will have been including him in training and if they think he's not physically ready then it's probably correct.

The old days of having a proper reserves are long gone. That's why teams are so keen to get players out on loan. There's only so much to be gained from bossing kids games.
