Championship Table - A different view

Don’t worry, I’ve not gone full Woodgate. Just thought it might be interesting to take a different view of the table, by point accrued by Boro against each team.

I’ve had this perception that we’ve done well against the higher up teams this season and rubbish again those at the bottom, but now I’m not sure that’s necessarily what has cost us.

To get a play off place you need to average about 3 points against each team. You can see, the obvious ones that have got us this year are Rotherham, Blackburn and Plymouth. Looking a bit further up Bristol and Coventry we have fallen below par, and Hull although we still have to play them a second time. At the top it’s looking pretty good apart from Leeds, who we still have a chance get points off.
  1. Ipswich 0 (Played Once)
  2. Leeds 0 (Played Once)
  3. Leicester 6
  4. Southampton 4
  5. West Brom 3
  6. Norwich 6
  7. Coventry 0
  8. Preston 3
  9. Boro
  10. Hull 0 (Played Once)
  11. Cardiff 3 (Played Once)
  12. Bristol City 0
  13. Sunderland 4
  14. Watford 3 (Played Once)
  15. Swansea 3 (Played Once)
  16. QPR 3
  17. Blackburn 1
  18. Stoke 0
  19. Millwall 3
  20. Birmingham 6
  21. Plymouth 1
  22. Huddersfield 4
  23. Sheffield Wednesday 4
  24. Rotherham 1
What this does seem to show is that in a way we’ve been reasonably consistent this season - there’s only two team so far we certain won’t have got any points against.

If we won all our remaining games (which we won’t) there’s a really high chance we’d get playoffs. Maybe this season hasn’t been as bad as it might seem.

We got 6 points off Norwich this season.

And we got 0 from Stoke over the two games (both 2-0 defeats)

And we only got 3 against Millwall - lost at home 1-0.

I prefer that table. We've got 67 points and are in 6th place 👍

19pts out of 36 against the bottom 6 v 19pts out of 30* (2 games still to play) against the top 6 shows we have underperformed against those at the bottom really.

We've not been consistent, but we appear to be fairly consistent against where we get points from.

I think that shows we're almost as good as anyone when we have a full team/ squad/ are not missing many key players and form is ok, but it hurts us when we don't have those players or are not in form, regardless of who we're playing, and also the timings of home and away games v certain teams will play into that.

The points accrued against the top 6 is fantastic, but it's no surprise most of those points came in the good runs we had and are currently having.

I think it's swings and roundabouts really.
We deserved a lot more from the two matches against Rotherham and we were pretty lucky to get the two wins against Leicester and home win against Norwich.

We could easily be sat here 24 pts from 36 against the bottom 6 and 10pts from 30 against the top 6.

There's no doubt that the 5 points dropped against Rotherham have hurt us. We played well enough to beat them in the away fixture but just couldn't put the ball away.
On the other hand we were lucky to get 3 points away at Leicester where they would have beaten us comfortably most other days. They missed a load of chances and we stuck our only 2 in. We were lucky to get the 3 points at home to Norwich. We had been dreadful up until the dodgy red card.

I'm a strong believer that you get what you deserve over 46 matches and luck evens out over a season. I just wouldn't look too much into the fact we have performed better against the top teams than the bottom teams. I feel like we have been fortunate against the top 6 teams and a bit unfortunate against the bottom teams (well Rotherham definitely).

Those two Rotherham games have really impacted things. How we got beat at Rotherham is beyond me. The home game wasn’t as dominant, but Boro still should have won the game.
