Charlie Chaplin Knew

Charlie was forced out of the USA in the early 1950s. He was deemed left wing and too much of a eye for much younger ladies. He also refused to become a US citizen. He went to live in Switzerland.

He owned his own film studio, United Artists, which he sold in the mid 1950s.

It’s a fascinating story how a bloke from London moved to Hollywood and basically became the most famous star in the world it’s hard to relate just how big he was compared to modern media. To take over America now is tricky for any Brit but to do it in that era was unheard of.

As you say Senator Joseph McCarthy infamous reds under the beds purge of Hollywood led to him leaving.

Not a bad film the one with Robert Downey Jr is.

Hollywood between the wars was rife with scandal and a real den of iniquity.

The strangest part of his whole 'life' is that he was kidnapped after his death! Yup, some fuqers dug up his grave stole his body and tried to extort his wife. I mean that screams hollywood script more than any perfect hollywood script he did.

He did rescue his mother from a South London Workhouse when he became famous. Before WW1 it was the workhouse for the very poor and ill, no welfare benefits then.

I did some script development work on (what I thought was) an excellent idea about the remains of various left wing figures such as Chaplin, Tom Paine, even Jesus, being dug up apparently by vandals, but it was a conspiracy of the new right to take them all until they were stolen back/rescued from Holborn under the guise of a jewellery robbery. It was a good initial idea, but needed a lot of work. No idea what happened to it.
