We are not makers of history, we are made by history"- MLK
this is a far older song than I knew, I thought it was a slave song.
Prefer this version tbhJoan Baez version is decentwe shall overcome - Google Search

I'm trying to remember the 1st time I heard it and sang it at a Boro match and it must at the end of of Notts County away in the FA cup in 83.We Shall Overcome has barely been sung since 2004, I bet we have fans in their mid/late-20s who don't even know it or its loose connection with our club.

I think it stopped when the song lost its relevance and we won a cup. The one or two occasions I’ve heard it since it hasn’t sounded right to me.I'm trying to remember the 1st time I heard it and sang it at a Boro match and it must at the end of of Notts County away in the FA cup in 83.
I was certainly never told about it's just something the more old timer Boro fans know and when to use it which makes it a shame if it stops because people don't know about it, or it comes under a cultural appropriation cloud.
I understand this point of view but conversely I've not heard it sung with more feeling than when we were leaving the Millennium Stadium.I think it stopped when the song lost its relevance and we won a cup. The one or two occasions I’ve heard it since it hasn’t sounded right to me
Wouldn’t disagree with that, but it sort of felt like it’s swansong.I understand this point of view but conversely I've not heard it sung with more feeling than when we were leaving the Millennium Stadium.
it was sang in the hol gateWhat about a version of tiptoe through the tulips?
Never heard of that!it was sang in the hol gate
‘ Tiptoe through the hol gate
With a flick knife
And a sawn off shotgun
Tip toe through the hol gate with me ‘
Not really appropriate these days
Quality that scrote , got the hairs standing on my neck .Bit folky but happy to lend a hand...
I was born in a northern town.
Between the steel river
and the North Yorks moors
a jewel in England's crown.
I live on the edge of a cruel sea
Cold and harsh
a mistress with no heart
she calls to me.
I was born in a Northern Town.
I was forged by industry
cast in iron
blood of molten steel
it beats through me
the world was built
by a northern town
we bridged the rivers
we laid the rails
we touched the clouds
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
We were raised with dignity
and a northern grit
that saw us through
the worst
that life could be
then the soul got sucked
from our northern town
a country's back was turned
as the works
were all shut down
I was born in a northern town
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
We'll rise again
and that northern town
on the river tees
that infant hercules
will stand her ground
So fight hard for
that victory
shout it loud
and shout it oh so proud
"We shall be".
I was born in a northern town
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
I was born in a northern town.
