Club Anthem

Seen a lot on social media about other teams and their pre match anthems are getting a lot of noise. Does anyone think this could benefit Boro?

I personally think Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra could be great before a match if the whole crowd were to join in. The song has ties to the fanzine and of course the famous quote from Bruce Rioch

Another option could be We Shall Overcome but there isn't much lyrically to that.

Let me know what you think, if you have better suggestions or if you think I'm just spouting rubbish.

These things happen naturally. It’s been done to death but we just have to accept we don’t really have one. If we started playing FMTTM before every match it would feel contrived and not at all like YNWA at Anfield which is basically what most people want to emulate, or an old folk song like Blaydon Races. Even Man United don’t have one.

We Shall Overcome has barely been sung since 2004, I bet we have fans in their mid/late-20s who don't even know it or its loose connection with our club.

Power Game was the Ayresome pre-match tune and I think thats what it will remain. I have strong memories of Centerfold (J Geils Band) at Ayresome being sung by the crowd, but hardly like it caught on as a proper anthem.

I actually thought Steel River may be played more after the Brighton match in 2016, but it wasn't. That was the point at which it could have caught on organically.

Reach Up (Perfecto Allstarz) is the closest thing we have to 'an anthem', even if not everyone likes it, it is sort of synonymous with the Riverside era and the crowd did actually embrace it unanimously for the first few years at the Riverside, hence why it has stuck.

We just have pigbag really don’t we which has been chopped, changed and edited a few times. I think the announcer wants us to have freed from desire as an anthem.

I like Pigbag, but I do think it adds something when clubs have the fans chanting a song at kick-off.

Though I don't actually like You'll Never Walk Alone as one.

I don't think that particular song ticks any boxes in truth. It's not exactly rousing and the quote means nothing to anyone under 35ish. That's not a criticism just opinion. Personally I think it has to happen naturally or not at all

Easy.

"Lets Dance" FA cup final version.

I can't imagine Stampy is up to much these days, we could bring him out pre kick off every home game to deliver his "Berwick Hills, Middlesbrough" line in person.

Job done. 👌🤪

I was listening to a podcast recently where someone said Stampy, in training, was simply unplayable. A "Monday to Friday" footballer they called him. Can't remember who it was, might have been Hignett or Fleming.

Infant Hercules would work but way too many words for it to catch on properly.

Ideally it needs a condensed version recording that could be played before the games. Got a fairly rousing chorus, is unique to our area and recognises our history that too many are trying to erase and forget.

IH is also not famous enough, tbf. I bet we have scores of fans who don't even know it exists.

Agreed but if we played it regularly enough each matchday it might catch on. As said above it needs to be organic. Play it every game and it would soon get into peoples heads

Also if we could get everyone to bring their kits along from a few years ago they turn them inside out and use them as a songsheet!!
