Connolly not taking a penalty

[QUOTE="festa5,
also of course been plenty of defenders over the years with a knack for taking them. David Unsworth, Leighton Baines, Dennis Irwin, Ian Harte, Julian Dicks etc etc.

And a few who haven't - Pearce, Southgate spring to mind.

To be fair Stuart Pearce was a fantastic penalty taker. I think keepers used to jump out of the way of some of them he hit them that hard! He just gets remembered for one particular penalty

Unbelievable.
He looked rusty and unfit in his first appearance and has not improved.
He appeared lethargic and off the pace again on friday night.

Somebody posted you have to want to take a penalty. You are potentially scoring for your team, so I can't believe a supposed striker would avoid the opportunity to score a goal because he might miss.

I can't believe sympathy sits with a loan player, rather than Duncan Watmore who has undeservedly lost his place, came on and made a major impact, ran his balls off and had the guts to step forward and technique to bury his penalty.

Connolly does not deserve to start matches. Not at all.
Not sure where I have said he has to start games or take Watmores place, but if it feeds your narrative feel free to read it whatever way you want to.

There’s so many assumptions and hypothetical scenarios in this thread that people just can’t know. It’s how players become targets because some people blindly take all this in and it becomes the accepted truth. Maybe his confidence is shot, maybe he’s not up to it… or maybe he’s just getting his fitness and sharpness back… who knows? No one here that’s for certain and he’ll probably benefit from a bit of support, at least until he comes good or shows he wasn’t worth the punt.

For what it’s worth Watmore and Balogun should be ahead of him at the moment, but Wilder subs his strikers so they’ll all get chances. I don’t think the way we set up most of the time would see Coburn starting.

What better way to rebuild confidence than bang in a goal at old Trafford. Always find it very odd that strikers forgo take penalties and let defenders go ahead of them.

As it turned out everyone is happy.
get what you are saying, but for a striker a pen is a no win situation, miss and confidence is shot, score and well, you are a striker you are expected to

Of course , but that is always the case .

Well said (y)

Aye, but it just seems a lot of judgement and guesswork very quickly for a player who’s barely played recently. He looks off the pace but I’d think support would be beneficial, not the few boos that could escalate quite easily- we’ve seen some amongst our support are happy to believe what they hear and take it out on players.
I’m not saying everything mentioned is wrong, I can’t possibly know either way, it just seems very quick to judge a player and a little bit odd.

What I would say, despite thinking the criticism is overly harsh, is that I would be starting Watmore over him until he has a positive impact off the bench.

Fair point.

Nothing to see here. Maybe he just didn’t fancy one. Given the amount of stick he’s had after a few games from some quarters his confidence is maybe low and he didn’t want to let anyone down. Maybe if those slagging him off get behind him it might help his confidence and form. He was getting pelters by some of our fans before he’s even kicked a ball for us. Effing ridiculous.

I do think that once he breaks his duck for us he’ll kick on. And if wilder has faith in him then so do I.

It's also possible the other takers were all pretty keen to step up so he was happy to let them. If he was in two minds and others are keen then of course you're going to let them go ahead of you.

Bamba and Peltier might be defenders but they're also ridiculously experienced pros who've seen it all before. That probably counts for as much as anything in a penalty shootout.

Me neither, not seen this mentioned anywhere else either?

He ballooned a shot over the bar in the first half against Coventry, he was booed by some fans.

There were also loud cheers when he was replaced, though that could quite easily be because Balogun was coming on, but I'm sure he'll have noticed that.

Some doyles in the north stand were booing him before kick off in the Coventry game.

Most important thing was that he came on as a sub and made himself useful. There’s no mistaking that it’s perhaps CWs job to rebuild him without compromising the team or squad’s performance so it’ll be interesting how he does in the next few weeks. One would hope that he gets a goal sooner rather than later — perhaps then he settles and starts to enjoy his time on Teesside.

I'm not so sure about that. We seem to do well with Crooks getting on the end of balls in to the box, and Coburn's probably the best of our strikers in the air. If we're throwing on a striker for the last 20 minutes, with the aim being about developing the player more than expecting they'll actually dictate the results, I'd like to see it be our own young player coming on.

Sure the cheers will have been for the double Balogun and Payero substitution rather than against Connolly

I think Wilder usually likes to start a couple of more mobile strikers, we’ll see though, he might get a chance as there’s a lot of games coming and I don’t think he’d let us down. I do rate Coburn and agree with what you say about bringing him on.
