Connolly not taking a penalty

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet as can’t see it on the front page of the forum, but is anyone else slightly concerned that Connolly, a striker, didn’t take a penalty even after 8 were taken? His confidence must be very low at the minute, Three centre halves took one before he would’ve, I was expecting Lumley to step up ahead of him!

I also noticed he didn’t show much emotion or celebration after they missed. Fair play to him for consoling Elanga though.

Hope he can get a scruffy tap in soon so he can get off the mark, he was unlucky with the flick that was saved last night.

Yeah I always think its poor when a striker doesn't take a penalty in the shootout, thats your job ffs.

I said on another thread that we have no idea whether he chose not to step up or why they took the pens in that order.

Maybe it was a confidence thing, maybe he’s a poor pen taker generally, maybe they practiced and others were stronger, who knows? Could be any number of reasons.

I'm glad he didn't. I'm pretty sure he would have missed and that wouldn't have helped his confidence...... if that's the problem.

I watch the warm ups at the home games and in both game he's played he's never hit the target once when they're taking shots at the keeper. High or wide every time. Early days but I'm beginning to wonder if there is a player in there. The training staff need to do some work with him.

btw. Josh Coburn absolutely lashes the ball in (y)

I'd have loved to see Coburn lash one in (although clearly couldn't).

Could be anything, probably best not to read into it. Maybe lack of confidence, maybe others more confident, maybe he had a bit of a knock (dead leg etc). We took 8 penalties and scored them all, I doubt there’s many on here would’ve had Bamba taking the 5th!

Not really, hes building up his confidence, the last thing he wabts to be remembered for is missing a vital penalty

To me it doesn't matter what pisition on the field a penalty taker should be, nothing to make a big deal of

Remember the great Liverpool team with forwarss to score at will yet Phil Neal, right back, was theur main penalty taker, who incedently had a penalty saved by Jim Platt

It's all about confidence on penalties and he clearly doesn't have any. I was a little surprised also that Watmore wasn't one of the five takers, but to be fair Bamba's a confident character.

Shame he didn't take a penalty but imagine if he'd been the only player to miss and it cost us. Would have ruined the lad. Like Elanga, Connolly is just a young lad himself.

I thought he did okay after coming on. I remember him winning us a couple of free-kicks in their half in extra-time to relieve the pressure.

It was definitely the right decision - cause we won!

The problem IMO though is if his confidence is shot to the point he'd be one of the last to take a pen, why is he starting for us in the league matches?
This is the point I was making. Think it’s clear and obvious after those three starts and this last night the lad is struggling with confidence. Needs one bundled in on the line to get him going.

I don't know at what point you wonder whether it is in our interests to rebuild Mr. Connolly's "confidence"? Four games in and I don't see anything to suggest that he is about to go on a run to blast us into the PL. In fact I see Watmore and Balogun who look more positive and dangerous sitting on the bench while he wanders around the football field trying to find his mojo.

I've seen enough. Start Watmore and give Connolly time on the pitch when he earns it. I noticed that he hadn't stepped up to take a pen after eight takes, who was the other player left to take one apart from him and Joe?
