Just symptomatic of a wider problem with politics. Trump and Johnson showed you can lie with impunity, you don't have to convincing and in many cases the bigger, more obvious, outrageous lie, the better. Particularly if you want to distract from something else.

I think that's pretty much what's happening here. He was actually asked about his dodgy business interests. But what's everyone talking about? His ridiculous claim not to be able to afford food.

There's also a depressingly high number of people who'll believe it or will know that it's a lie, but admire him for it in some twisted way.
