Coventry v Man Utd

the degree of error is so small that it’s imperceptible
Says you. Has it been calculated? Error will change every time the pitch is white-lined.

I bet if the width of the pitch is measured 10 times down its length you will get 10 numbers, all of them bigger than a toe nail.

In a report published 19th January 2024, the UK Government announced the development of precision laser-guided missile systems.
Perhaps they can be adapted to work like AI and eliminate the need for the dum wits at the end of a VAR screen?

If found to be offside, a surface to surface missile is deployed against the offender. Clean up the game (y)

If you’ve got evidence of significant margin of error, I’m all ears

Have I had too much wine or does the blue line go over the utd players foot?

Those lines aren't what determines offside, it's the 1 pixel lines. The "broadcast lines" are a thicker overlay for illustration.

I'd also be more concerned about the enormous clogs the Man United players appear to be wearing in that pic.

Shame Coventry didn’t go through. It would have made a good final. Now it will be a boring win for Man City.

No one would have complained had this goal stood 5 years ago.

Each pitch is calibrated by hawk-eye and a 3d image of the pitch is created, which includes the camber. It's then recalibrated with 5 match cameras for each game.

You would lose your bet.

This would have been complained about 5 years ago, 10 years ago and 20 years ago.

It's like some kind of weird re-imagining of history, where no one complained about decisions before VAR. We have VAR because of the complaining.
Before VAR, in this particular instance any analysis or TV freeze frames would have concluded the players were level and the goal was therefore onside.
Nobody would have measured it with the precision VAR does.
The complaints were always regarding much more obvious errors.

No need, it's in my post above.
Where do they state the error of measurement? Do they re-line the pitch if they find that the goal planes or side lines are not parallel? What is the camera frame rate used to determine when the ball is played?

So no marginal decisions were complained about 5 years ago?

If VAR was around in 1997 Gianluca Festas’ goal in The FA Cup Final would have counted - and that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Yes, but this wouldn't have been seen as marginal. Any freeze frame sky produced would have been accepted as showing the players as being level.
Now if the goal had been disallowed as offside, that would be different. Nobody would have said, "but look at his toe, look at his toe!"

I must be imagining the days when marginal offside decisions were analysed to death and complained about, given or otherwise.

Oh, it still happens in leagues without VAR.
