The new ball can often mean the batsmen score quicker as iits harder and flies off the bat making it easier to score boundaries...

You have to tell the umpire if your bowling left or right handed and which side of the wickets you’re bowling from (over or round the wickets) and they will inform the batter

I fell foul of this when I first started playing for our works team. Probably the only wicket I nearly took.
