Cruising in 2021 - The Covid Line

A couple we know well have just been telling us that they have booked a cruise for may 2021 - they believe that by then they will have had the vaccination and all will be well. We'd like to do likewise to be honest but I'm not sure that we'll have sight of a vaccination before mid to late summer.

Spoke to our practice doctor on Friday and he said the likelihood is that some northern areas will start to see a program introduced in March, but as yet they are not sure of the timings or the intended tier group targets.

It looks like it's going to be interesting - even more so if foreign governments impose a vaccination mandate for entry to their countries - especially for anti-vaxxers!

May is a bit optimistic in my opinion for the vaccine. Older people may have had it by then so suppose it depends on your age. I want to go away in Feb but no way am I going to pay additional cost for tests prior to going to Canaries. Will just bide my time I think.

I've got to be honest, if I was going to book a holiday currently and was in any way at risk it wouldn't be a cruise. I'd be looking for an apartment or villa with an outdoor space/ pool so if there are outbreaks you can relax and enjoy a beer/ meals on your own regardless.

If you want covid coverage you could sign up to a vaccination research trial- that way you are likely to have > 70% protection. The only risk is you have to pay extra for the second head you may develop.

We have a voucher to use up from a cancelled cruise from this year. Not sure I would book anything yet, but if there is free cancelation then at least that is some peace of mind.

I do worry that many of the cruise company's will go bankrupt, or send their cruise ships to the scrapyard.

This picture was from earlier in the year. The cruise ships there are not that old:-

Agreed, cruise ships are essentially a sailing petri dish.

Own Villa / Chalet for a week and you're sorted.

I know a couple who have booked a cruise to Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand for November the Southern Hemiisphere summer.
I hope it happens, May seems a bit risky for your pals.

When you say "a programme introduced in March" what do you mean exactly?

Aren't vaccinations starting tomorrow nationwide? I know they aren't starting all guns blazing but it's definitely starting by the sounds of it...

That's the Pfizer vaccine starting this week, by March the vaccines that don't require cold storage will be off the production line.

Oh.. I was under the impression the Oxford vaccine was "days away" from being approved and we have a large number ready to go!

I think they are still gathering data before they can apply for potential use. I think early next year at the earliest.
