Dael fry

Our fans have no idea. This is the same Dael Fry who's represented England at every level other than the full national team. Those coaches / managers clearly don't have a clue. Mom tonight.
Not sure he was mom tonight, but a good point well made. we have some numpty fans.

Fry seems to raise his game against the big teams. It is a bit frustrating when we know he is capable of keeping world class players quiet (eg Harry Kane) that he doesn’t always do it constantly at championship level.

Hopefully he stays injury free as he is one of those players who seems to take forever to get match fit after an injury.

This is the crap that annoys me. In championship games the defence is exposed and have no cover, because thats the way we play. When we play against a better team, leicester, villa and chelsea, we use different tactics and look solid, because they have cover.

It's not a difficult game.

It’s not just being exposed though is it. He has had some howlers in him and some awful performances. On his day he’s very good but there’s a reason he’s not pushed on and been snapped up by a PL team as that looked inevitable earlier in his career.

I rate RVB and Clarke more and think they should be our first choice when/if everyone is fit.

I probably prefer clarke and vdb more too. However, you opened with he raises his game against better teams. You have to recognize how exposed we are week in, week out in the chapionship. Not sure if clarke would, neccesarily deal with it.

You are not understanding the difference between the two scenarios.

The whole team defended very well, and they certainly had too with the amount of possession Chelsea had. Fry was top notch along with Clarke on the night.

People just don't understand or don't want to.

If Carrick thinks we can dominate possession against a particular team than our style / identity is to do just that and play open attacking football come what may which makes defending infinitely more difficult.

But as with Leicester / Villa / Chelsea he knows that we can't do that so we maintain a defensive shape that allows those defenders to play to their strengths.

It shouldn't be hard to understand but clearly is for lots of people.

Was class tonight. Still think he can be improved upon for next season but tonight isn’t about that. I really do think eventually Clarke has to be first choice. The man was superb again tonight.

Let’s hope the pair of them can keep it up anyway.

I think that is the dilemma, Dael is a fantastic defender but since he came on the scene he has regressed with the ball at his feet. He doesn’t seem to have progressed since breaking through so when exposed in the Championship still seems like a young lad (bit of a fanny) at times. Having said that his man marking in the Leicester game was second to none.

I think he started rediscovering his form when he was paired with Paddy and we got a grip of things, and he’s been decent since, despite a chopping and changing back line. Like all local players, a few off games and he gets stick, a good one and he rightly gets praised. He’s always been a more out and out, traditional defender than a cultured modern ball playing CB for me, and I think he thrives when he is up against better quality and he can be a bit more no-nonsense about things.

Its funny how these threads resurface after a good performance and you get all the 'we told you he was the bees knees'. When in fact it's a bit of both, sometimes he's great, sometimes he's poor.

One of the reasons he plays for us.

He was exceptional tonight, he always seems to raise his game for these tough cup games. He did the same against Man u marking Ronaldo.
