Dan Barlaser

He'll be out the team as soon as there's someone else available. And he'll bring someone in to push him down the pecking list further.

Because he's not good enough.
I tend to agree that he'll be second choice but our results with him in the side have been good, particularly when teamed with Hackney.

He made one good chance last night, the only one that came from midfield.

What did you think of Howson's game, he was his midfield partner?

Steady. Nothing special.

Well if he's going to maintain a place in the side that has to change.
Ive said numerous times this season that he looks like hes dwindling but he didn't cost us two goals.

He was very isolated in the middle. I don't agree with the tactics that Carrick employed playing Barlaser so deep and splitting the centre backs but I think he only did that to give Barlaser the time he needs on the ball.

I like to think that Boro fans are more savvy and less reactive than others. This, of course, is ridiculous.... as amply demonstrated on this thread. And the ones slagging Rodgers and Crooks.

I think he did it because he wanted the full backs to push on, which they did, and did fairly well.

I was disappointed with the defenders and Howson as much as Barlaser for the second goal, and for whoever organised on the pitch for the corner. Leaving your best central defender marking nobody isn't the way to defend a corner.

Only if you ignore all the games we lost with him in the side. The stats on matches he has started this season are:
Started: 10
Won: 4
Drawn: 0
Lost: 6

I'm not picking sides here but just because he was in the team for the small run of games where we weren't rubbish doesn't mean you can ignore the majority of games we have lost with him playing.

All of our midfielders have been poor for the majority of the season. I don't think Barlaser has to be singled out but Howson and Hackney have proven they are good players over long runs of games and Barlaser hasn't done that yet.

A real mix of impressive vision and basic errors. To become part of things long term his intensity needs to step up for me. Did deliver one great ball into Crooks 2nd half

He should have been doing this all game. His vision is dreadful. I rarely look to single out players following a defeat but I felt that Barlaser had too much of the ball last night and didn't do anything with it. He almost played like a sweeper.

Sooner Hackney & O'Brien are back the better.

I can only remember Mowatt having one or two good games. Perhaps my memory is not as good as others, but he was not good enough for a place in the team most of the time he was here.

O'Brien - agree, he was probably our best signing of the off-season, and it is a huge disappointment that he is injured.
Mowatt is now first choice in a West Brom team in the play offs
He started underwhelmingly here ,but improved - and was certainly rightly ahead of Barlaser when Carrick had them both to choose from
Barlaser has now been here longer than he was, and hasn't really improved

He’s the current boo boy and victim of our so called fans blame culture.

It’s always the same people, blame Barlaser, McNair, Crooks etc.
I do agree with that
He's all we have at the moment - so we should all get behind him
And as mentioned above Barlaser put in a great cross for Crooks - and if that had been scored we wouldn't have lost, so while I'm not too enamoured with his performances it's not all bad.
He did have a couple of games before he was rested when his child was born , but unfortunately more recently he seems to have gone back to his earlier levels of performance

For the first goal... its straight forward to for me. Barlaser has Delap marked. We lose the first header and Dan has gone to sleep resulting in a free header from 3 yards out. It's school boy stuff. If he stays with Delap and challenges, vets beaten. I would just say its one of those things. It happens. But he totally goes to sleep.

The second one Dijk gets beaten, its not great defending but over the course of 90 minutes, full backs will be beaten and balls will come into the box. I've never seen a game where this doesn't happen at some point. Its abiut minimising the amount of balls in at source and dealing with them when they do come. We look in good shape when the ball is crossed. Fry and VDB have taken up good positions and are reasonably tight to their striker. Engel probably should be tighter to his man on the back post but he's goal side. Barlaser and Howson are well positioned to deal with the cut back and the runners coming in. This is proven when the cut back comes across it comes straight to Barlaser's feet. I still don't know what he was actually trying to do. Whether he was trying to get the ball under control or what? But he just needs to put his foot through that and get rid of it. If Engel had been tighter to his man it may have been prevented but 95% of the blame has to.lie with Dan.

For the first goal Barlaser AND Crooks are blocking Delap's run, they don't, he runs through the middle of them and once through it's too late. If either had followed there was no chance of them stopping it.

I can understand us using Crooks as part of that but Barlaser against a big striker, not a chance. What was Rav's role?

It's certainly schoolboy stuff, the coaches need to have another look and leadership at the back needs to be established.

The second one he made a poor attempt at a.block or interception, maybe caught in two minds but there was a free player to pick out, so Howson wasn't back in time. Engel wasn't close enough to his man either, I agree. It doesn't matter whether it happens regularly in games or not, but Dijksteel dropped a clanger too.

Watch it again. Howson is back in time. Him and Barlaser are exactly where they should be to defend the initial ball and any subsequent runners.

The goal scoring strike is actually struck pretty much from the spot Barlaser was in when the initial ball comes across. The problem was after Barlaser fluffed it he then tries to recover it and leaves a big hole for Tufan to attack. Howson tries to cover it but it was impossible. Zero blame lies with Howson in my opinion.

I'll have a look 👍🏻

I agree about Howson, just had another look.
