Depends on the exercise they are doing 1 V1 -2 V 2 or aggressor or target. It all comes down to training of pilots or Fighter Controllers.

Poor Olivier Dessault came to a sticky end a couple of years ago. Got his flying instructor to land the helicopter in a different spot than usual, to keep his shoes clean (allegedly) clipped a tree and Bob’s yer mother’s brother.
