Deal accepted for Morgan Rogers.

On a side note, it's another example of why I hate the fact we're in the Championship, and can never understand fans saying they prefer it to the Premier League.

We weren't really in a position to play hard ball with Villa, because Rogers could easily have thrown his toys out of the pram and downed tools for the remainder of the season if the deal had have fallen through.

This is the sad reality of being a Championship club. When a Premier League club takes an interest in one of your players, it's always going to be a struggle either keeping hold of the player, or getting the deal we feel is most appropriate, and the reality is the Prem clubs hold all the cards.

Villa have zero FFP wiggle room now, so if we offer Sheff Utd the cash for Cam Archer and they accept (he doesn't fit their system), then Villa won't be able to invoke their buyback clause.....just saying. Probably be 3m short of being able to afford him sadly, nice dream though, and would be funny as hell if we could pull it off

We signed Finn Azaz from them for £2m and sold Rogers for 5 times as much.

If you’re going to compare Rogers to a completely different sort of player in Wharton, why not compare him to Azaz??

100%. I do personally think Rogers is better than Azaz.... BUT.... We bought Azaz for £2.5m and there's claims we've sold Rogers for a £10m upfront fee.... Is he £7.5m better? I don't think so.

I think Rogers has a higher ceiling, hence the prem move and large fee.

In terms of the here and now, though, I don’t see Azaz as a downgrade. He can be a very good player for us in the championship for the next year or two (until we get promoted!)

I haven't compared the players once, I've compared the deals. Not sure why people are acting like this is somehow mad thing to do.

I agree Rogers has more potential. I do think Azaz is a slight downgrade here and now... but I'd still rather have Azaz and £7.5m to spend to improve the squad than to keep Rogers.

I think we have to see what Azaz plays like for the rest of the season before we judge him. Rodgers showed promise the more experience he got, but he's not the finished article yet. Tough place for him to gain the experience, good luck to him all the same.

Because the deals are based on the players. The type of player Wharton is, is very difficult to find. He's controlling the midfield in games at 19 years old.
Similar (and comparable) to the Alex Scott deal when he was sold to Bournemouth.

Rogers is a great player, I've always liked him - but he is worth less money than Wharton because he doesn't bring what Wharton brings to the team.

kinda agree, Rogers will have moments that Azaz will never/rarely acheive in the here and now....but he will also give the ball away a hell of a lot as he learns. Azaz is a couple of years ahead in footballing brain age, and is more steady. The big questions is can Azaz integrate quickly enough for us not to miss Rogers? It's been a fairy slow start by Azaz for me.

Happy enough with this if we have got £10 million + up front. Hope the deal isn't all made up of add-ons and the recruitment team have learned how these can be quite hard to achieve following the sale of Spence - for which we will never see them. As many others have said, hopefully during the last couple of weeks of this saga we have spent the time working on a replacement or even two for him and we can come out of it in a better position both financially and on the pitch.

Wharton and Alex Scott are both better players than Rogers and much younger (at time of potential sale).

Hackney is more comparable to Wharton and valuation will be similar. There will be an argument that Wharton will be valued more because he's broke through a bit earlier and is younger however Hackney is currently performing higher. Both probably in that £18-20m bracket. £20m+ would be big.

Forgotten Gaston Ramirez?

Premier league: lose every week. Matches are all sold out to people with 5000 loyalty points. VAR. Bigger clubs nick your players.
Championship: win every week. Matches are easy to get to. No VAR. bigger clubs nick your players.

That's true, he's not the finished article, far from it.

I wonder how the extra millions are triggered?

In fairness to Azaz, he played wide left vs Rotherham and didn't look comfortable playing in that position.

I'm hoping we'll see more from him if he gets a run of games playing as a 10, which I suspect will happen now that Rogers has gone.
