Apart from the centre midfielder playing upfront, the central striker playing wide right and the LWB/left mid playing left back of course.
Defenders, do we need more?

I think it's less to do with the quality of the defenders than how they are asked to play (especially under Wilder) and lack of protection from midfield. Fry and Lenihan are not the absolute best in the division but can hold their own in any top 6 championship club. Smith is top 10 championship club material. Giles does lack defensive abilities but is one of the best attacking full backs in the league. Not to say that they can't be improved but the biggest improvement would be either to switch to a more defensive formation or to bring in a more defensive-minded midfielder. Switching to a more defensive mindset was what Leo did with mixed results but still resulted in 2 clean sheets in 5 matches. Wilder and Carrick have managed 3 clean sheets between them in 23 matches.

Would have thought right wing was the number one priority if Carrick doesn't fancy Jones. Perhaps the intention is to play archer there.

Clark has been doing some training since just before Xmas - a month now. I am concrened his injury is not healing.
Djkesteel was down to miss January, not heard much in the last 3 weeks and no sign in training photos yet.
Don't forget Fisher he has been injured for over 18 months, but still on the books. Wsn't it planed he would playing some under 21 games in January?
We need 8 fit defenders in the squad, its only 6 at present. If its still only 6 at the end of Janaury I would recruit another one who is fit.

Our defensive frailties stem from our own attacking strength, Namely McCree drifting inside allowing Giles to bomb on. Signing more/different defenders wouldn't necessarily dix this. We need a more defensive left sided midfielder to help double up on Giles' side and a more combative midfield option alongside hackney howson for those tough games/ bench option.
I'd like to see a defender or two arrive, if Mcnair/Dijksteel/Bola leave, which i suspect they will!
No. I wouldn't want to see any of them start more than 1 game to cover an emergency. None of them can play those roles.

If we manage to get in the play offs, we need a couple of top class defenders .
Dijksteel , Fisher ,Bola , Clarke need replacing with better.
Hecke / Cresswell is a good start , LCH LB needs addressing .
I will also add
Fry and Lenaghan do not dominate in either box , we do not score from set pieces, and often lose the battle in the air .
We are too nice, some leaders through the spine of the team are needed IMO .
Watching the skunks, they are full of tough , hardened pros, Burn , Bruno , Wilson , Maxim , even Joelinton is a tough act .
MC and Roy Keane took no prisoners , but had ability, let's hope he finds our versions .
