DEFENSIVE CRIMES

Jack Clark's pass to Nazariy Rusyn.. completely unmarked whilst 2Fry and 1RVDB are playing footsie with Jobe Bellingham.. I'm guessing it's 6OBrien
looks like 4Howson and 5Azaz.. and 7Engel in no mans land.
Engel had just put a cross in from the byline at the other end, someone should be covering him and his position and, by inference, Rusyn. You can’t ask full backs to be in 2 places at once. You either ask them to attack and cover them or you ask them not to attack.

O'Brien

That on top of the pathetic attempt to of a save makes it one of the most unnecessary goals we've conceded this season, which is saying something.

Naive given the late stage in the game.

Individaully most of them are where you'd expect. CBs aren't in bad positions, Ayling and Howson are where you'd want them. Fundamentally it's the cover for Engel that's missing (Azaz, Hackney,, O'Brien (he's there but doesn't look like he's fully appreciated the runner on the right.)

If we have a flying fullback playing like roberto carlos then we need a dunga type sitting and covering his position when he attacks

Barlaser is a Dunga type
No hes not he couldn't tackle a Sunday dinner nevermind a 50/50 challenge. He also doesnt have the defensive mentality and nouse to sniff out danger. To me the midfield needs shaking up i would give obrien the sitting role we know its not natural to howson Hackney and Barlaser

tongue in cheeks dunga type.. dung

As mentioned previously Engel had just put a cross so we can absolve him from blame. ayling fry and RVB are marking one player and should be shuffling over to cover. Azaz is one the wrong side of the pitch too if he has got dragged across the rest of the midfield should react. RVB is very very slow getting out the goal scorer.

unbelievably bad defending - what is O’Brein doing leaving Ruskyn unmarked there. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player in that position have so much room. He could have stopped an made sandwich and still had time to shoot

Watch it back and O'Brien is running back looking straight at Ruysn in space all on his own. For some reason he then deviates into the centre of the pitch thinking that's where the danger is.

If he literally runs in a straight line, as he was doing, clarke can't play the pass and we have a much greater chance of defending that situation.

It's a good run from Jobe to take VDB away but in that situation he needs to pass him over to Fry and maintain his position

Can only assume O’Brien somehow thinks Clarke might play the ball to the player on his left. Why else does he change direction. Such a stupid goal to concede.

The one player who's hard some weird stick for this is Engel. Arguably the only one in that photo who's beyond criticism. How can he be in two places at once? He'd just bombed up the left wing and put in a cross.

So somebody has to notice that in the team and fill in the gap until he's back. Clearly that didn't happen.

The rest was just a shambles of how not to defend. I think Ayling having a yellow also didn't help. I'm sure he would have fouled Clarke had he not been on one.

That said after all of that the keeper has to save it. The very least turn it behind for a corner. It's bit of a defencive sh*t show. Yet the keeper has to save it.

Based on that still and not having seen the actual footage of the move back again, I'm of the opinion that our 2 centre backs have dropped too deep there.

I think from memory it was a quickish break down their left so Ayling is probably where you'd expect him.

Maybe Rav could have split the 2 most advanced sunlun players in that situation so he is closer to the ultimate goal scorer on the switch, but it effectively leaves Fry 1 on 1 if a simple ballis played into the other attacker.

O'Brien could drop in to cover at LB but I'd also comment that Howson is miles off preventing that pass by Clark, he should be doing more.

But for me the disconnect between CBs and RB in that snap shot is something I don't like and I still don't think the CBs should be so deep.

I'll summarise and say it basically shows a complete lack of defensive shape and discipline.

If Engel has bombed forward, surely Ayling needs to support the centre backs, one of them could then have shifted across a bit to cover the threat?
