DEFENSIVE CRIMES

3 backs off , 2 marks the striker and 1 covers the full back and blocks the shot.
Should have happened before Clarks pass - Circus defending again.
We need to learn how to close games down - as bit like teams do to us ie Rotherham

No hes not he couldn't tackle a Sunday dinner nevermind a 50/50 challenge. He also doesnt have the defensive mentality and nouse to sniff out danger. To me the midfield needs shaking up i would give obrien the sitting role we know its not natural to howson Hackney and Barlaser
Agree with you Glover - this is one of the most important roles we need to acquire in the summer

I was just trying to identify the players tbh
Newy was right , Engel was out of position, he is a left back , greenwood should have been up there not Engel . He knew he had fer ked up.
It happened numerous times 1st half where they got behind him .
He is a liability position ally and has cost us point through poor decisions and being out of position.
Thomas every week from now on .

Nah.. O’Brien was caught

RVDB does the right thing.. but I think he hesitates as Fry is flapping.

We need Jones, Crooks, McGree and Latte Lath available.

Not having half our squad is costing us points.

I would bring in up to FOUR free agents

The one player who's hard some weird stick for this is Engel. Arguably the only one in that photo who's beyond criticism. How can he be in two places at once? He'd just bombed up the left wing and put in a cross.

So somebody has to notice that in the team and fill in the gap until he's back. Clearly that didn't happen.

The rest was just a shambles of how not to defend. I think Ayling having a yellow also didn't help. I'm sure he would have fouled Clarke had he not been on one.

That said after all of that the keeper has to save it. The very least turn it behind for a corner. It's bit of a defencive sh*t show. Yet the keeper has to save it.
whilst I agree someone else has to fill in and notice Engel has gone forward, it's 1-0 at home with 7 minutes of normal time remaining. Maybe the left back doesn't go bombing on in that situation.

Agree with that he shouldn't be so advanced so late in the game. Or he takes into the corner rather than crossing in that old cliche game management

Have you ever watched modern football? Most teams use their fullbacks in attacking positions, whether that be out wide or, as has become the fashion this season, pushing into central midfield. For example, look at Chilwell and Disasi destroying us.

If Thomas plays, he’ll be expected to do exactly as Engel does and provide attacking width in the opposition half.

Problem number 1 with that plan, we only have one more place in our squad even if you discount Lenihan and smith.

For me thats where they messed up. Them purple movements should have been made and got them players somewhere in those areas.
IMO in this instance Ayling should have dropped deeper alongside i think its Fry which allows the left centre back (VDB?) to get over and cover Engel who was out of position after a spell of attacking play and O'Brien should have dropped deeper when he seen Howson pressing the ball. We had 5 players (6 if you count #5 i think thats Azaz?) covering their counter attack of 3 players, poor positioning cost us.

Hindsight, we've just been on the attack and a couple of lapses of concentration.

Yes but at the right times. Engel is too impulsive at time. He has a tendency to commit defensively when he needs to hold position and defend the space, in very much the way he has attacked in this situation rather than play it forward and hold tight.

If the still was taken 3 seconds earlier, O'brien is where engel is, he just needs to run in a straight line, not diagonally infield, and he cuts the option to rusyn out, or makes it a much more difficult ball. He is in no mans land ball watching.

If you go back further, Silvera and Coburn both attack the exact same space for the cross, so when you look into the granular detail of the goal, before they even get the shot off, its an absolute $hit show!

A tragedy in 7 parts:

1. Game management failure. 5 mins from time protecting a 1 goal lead and Engel is the furthest player forward
2. Ayling inexplicably decides to go join in him in the last third, committing 6 players up field and leaving loads of space to be exploited in both out wings.

3. Fry needs to cover across to deny Clarke the space to drive forward, because both Ayling and Howson are not quick enough to slow Clarke down. This is fine, but a 2-vs-1 starts to develop on Rav. Howson should at this point react to fry covering Clarke and Ayling return to position, by covering across to the midfield runner but fails to. this means we have 3 people loosely 'marking' Clarke
4.but no one is actually putting a challange in or really pressuring the ball.

5. Rav has to react to the midfield run from Bellingham. this leaves the space behind him. Howsons mistake is that he lets Clarke come back inside, everyone knows Clarke will do that given the option, schoolboy error.
6. O'Brien's mistake is that he hasn't recognised the free man and has stopped retreating to support the defence.

7. Glover slightly out of position and not strong enough wrists.

I'm not sure taking into the corner with 7+ minutes left is sensible game management.
Once Engel had committed to being so far forward, then he had to try and set up a goal scoring opportunity or what was the point?
Possibly he shouldn't have committed himself at that stage but if Coburn had gone near post and Silvera had hung back near the penalty spot there's a good chance we score and everyone is praising Engel's energy and positivity.
And also praising the team for going for the killer second rather than sitting back, hanging on to a single goal lead.
We should have had enough to prevent that goal without Engel being back there. The players have been coached how to cover when the fullbacks are forward. They just switched off.

We didn't have enough to cover once Ayling bombed up field we had 6 players in their final third. A quick give go and spin by Clarke and we are out of balance and never really recover it.

Renyer 20yo Brazilian right winger,

Kays Ruiz-Atil 21yo French/Morrocan attacking midfielder,

Joaquín Lavega 19yo Uruguayan left winger

Aké Loba 25yo Ivorian striker

should just be the striker that takes up that spot.. right?
