Did you used to have a rusty car?

Back in the 90’s I had a Vauxhall Astra and the floor was rotten, the footwell was like a lake some days.

I always feared that one day my foot would go straight through the floor but it didn’t, thankfully.
When I was a kid my dad had a knackered Vauxhall Viva for a bit that was more rust than car, and the passenger side door was tied shut with rope so that it wouldn't swing open when he was driving.

People always say that Alfas are susceptible to rust in a wet climate. Mine is old enough to vote and it's survived Manchester and London and South Wales and Teesside and there's no rust on it at all.

I had a Ford Orion ghia. Always remember it failing MOT for corroded subframe, when I got underneath no signs of corrosion so took it back. The tester kindly pointed out the lack of subframe was what he meant and that my springs shouldn’t sit directly on the floor !

My first car a 1972 Mini bought new. £760 with under seal. Sold it two years later as a rust bucket for £650 and bought a Datsun Cherry but had it Ziebarted body seal. Did the trick. Anyone remember them? Workshop in North Ormesby.

Jag Series 3 V12. Rust everywhere. Had the best engine on the planet, but the car it was built into would just rot around it .... nice pepperpot alloys though. They didn't rust.
Lovely car. Like driving around in a very fast gentleman's club. It was always a tad alarming when you hit kickdown to overtake and the computer would tell you that you were doing 3 miles per gallon.

I remember Datsuns were particularly bad. In fact pretty much everything was.

The advice was to buy a car from down south where they didn't have to use salt on the roads.

Yes, I remember Ziebart, little yellow plugs where they had drilled and filled. Quick google search and they’re still around.

My dad use to have a black Volkswagen Variant that I use to drive. Going out trying to pull girls in a car that looked like a hearse had a huge impact on my love life. 🤣 🤣 🤣

It needed a new exhaust and I remember us making and welding it using 6mm thick pipe. The car was a beast.
