Did you used to have a rusty car?

My dad use to have a Volkswagen Variant that I use to drive. Going out trying to pull girls in a car that looked like a hearse had a huge impact on my love life. 🤣 🤣 🤣

It needed a new exhaust and I remember us making and welding it using 6mm thick pipe. The car was a beast.

Baked bean tins, gun gum and jubilee clips for exhaust repairs 😂. These youngsters don’t know they’re born 😂

When one used to go to see a second car in the 70s/80s you would always go with magnet in hand. For thos that know what I'm on about, you've been there\!!!

Literally everybody knew the fine art of chopping rust and filling back in the day!

first car was a perforated mark 1 escort with a 1600 capri engine shoe horned into it and over sized wheels that rubbed on the inner wheel archs on full lock, had to have a screwdriver put across the solenoid to start it more often than not

Datsun 120Y LNP180T

my first car. Tons of rust, but saw some action, that thing 😜
My dad had one of those for a bit too. It was the big estate model and it started out being white but because it was rusty and looked awful my dad got is sprayed as cheaply as he could, so it ended up a lovely shade of dog sh*t brown. I can remember us going on holidays to either Scotland or Cornwall in it every year with me and my brother travelling in the boot, surrounded by suitcases and bags.

It used to be Scotland one year and then Cornwall the next. We never went anywhere else.
Cornwall for us every year when I was a nipper, at least you got to holiday in another country :) The drive to Cornwall used to take 24 hours back then - including a sleep in a layby for a few hours.

It was the same caravan park in Creetown in Scotland and the same caravan park in Cornwall too. We did go to the Norfolk Broads once with my grandparents, and our one holiday abroad as a family was a fortnight in Salou, and there was a heatwave and the temperatures were ridiculous and I spent most of those two weeks delirious in the hotel room because I couldn't handle it.

Yes. I could see the road through the floor of my Escort. The drivers seat wasn't attached to the floor either, the mountings had corroded away.
Ha! I had a mark I Escort that you could poke your fingers through the sills. I kept it nice looking on the outside patching & fighting chrome rust etc right but at the 17 year mark was told by the MOT mechanic to drive it over the border for scrapping before it snapped in half.

I'd imagine if you owned a Ford in the 80s it probably had rust.

Car owners of today don't give a second thought about it.

A Morris 1100 , our family car which rotted with age . When I was sat in the back as a kid my Dad would shout when we were going around a corner so I could hold his seat as upright as possible as the floor where the holding bolts were had disappeared.

My first car was a mini van, failed on a mostly plastic sub frame and perforated sills, a Vauxhall Cavalier with rusty wings and worst of all, a Ford Orion, more rust than metal.
My CD 175 Honda mudguard went from metal to fibreglass over its lifetime.

First car was a Vauxhall viva gls with twin headlights and a rev counter but no functioning speedo…
body was rotten but I rebuilt cylinder head, ground down valve seats, and done tap pits and other stuff that kids don’t get to do on engines these days…

must’ve had a warped cylinder head as oil kept going white… radiator burst while out so fixed it with a couple of eggs to get me home…

sold it a few days later and was worried lad would find out about radiatior but he crashed it a week later so all was good…

next car was a beetle that a guy had botched up to look tidy, only to find it was rotten and I was lucky to still be driving it after a year.. so got it done proper… it’s still going somewhere, 30 odd years later, although I think it’s had a couple of light Restos since…
