Digs at Wilder

Wilder clearly believes his own hype and thinks he should be managing at the top end of the PL.

I was thrilled when he started and up until the last few weeks of his time I still thought he was a great manager. But sticking to the same system when it clearly wasn’t working was a big sign that his ego was too big for the club. It will be interesting to see where he manages next. A mid table championship club I reckon

We didn’t buy well in the summer though and that wasn’t Wilders fault
Lumley - Steffen
Stojanovic - Roberts
Hall - Lenihan
Peltier - Smith
Taylor - Giles
Wood - Clarke
Siliki - Mowett
Tavernier- Luongo
Payero - Hackney
Sporar - Forss
Connolly - Hoppe
Balogun - Akpom

7th to Relegation?

Still makes me laugh how it was never the systems fault despite the fact it was that system causing us to leak so many goals, centre back comes up the pitch but as soon as possession is lost the opposition learned to put a quick diagonal ball into the space vacated and to the surprise of everyone but wilder the opposition are free to square the ball across the box for a tap in.
We were leaking goals early on because of silly mistakes, being unfairly punished and some shocking decisions which led to goals, this was nothing to do with the system, it's individuals/ ability, and other things beyond our reasonable control.
We were also not scoring enough, from not taking chances.

Neither of these seem to have changed much, since Wilder went and if anything the defending has got even worse, even with a 4 in some games.
The only difference going forward has been Akpom, but after a good start he missed a lot of games and we were relying on Watmore's finishing :/ Chuba's been great though, much to everyone's surprise.

Yesterday the finishing was better, but their keeper just had a blinder, it happens.
The defending for their goal was horrendous. Hackney played Smith into a bit of trouble but he would have dealt with that if his first touch wasn't shocking. Nobody was on the left which ended up in the cross coming in, as Giles wasn't expecting us to lose the ball so easy (but was too high and made little effort to get back). Jones went from being 10 yards the right side of Weimann, to being the wrong side and not knowing where he was, and then even worse he got dragged inside, and then didn't get back outside or track Weiman's run, very poor. It's not like Weimann's not a threat either.

We had luck against Hull, two own goals, but deserved the win. The goal conceded was a poor mistake/ touch from Howson, but again bad defending not closing down/ doubling up/ covering when we had spare men

Preston, Fry hospital pass to Howson, cost him a booking and didn't defend the resulting free-kick well, which ended up in a goal (from unmarked Riis, who is their main threat, who we should know all about). The second was a silly foul from Akpom, another badly defended set piece, and another soft goal.

Blackburn, another badly defended set piece, unmarked man back post, another bad goal. 70 yard ball to one man, which none of our three defenders even got a remote challenge in on the pass, then nothing on him turning, bringing down and shooting (from 25 yards), he was unlikely to score from there, but still did.

Milwall, silly foul from McNair, crap free kick but more bad luck deflecting the ball in. Soft free kick given away in the middle of the pitch, but didn't defend the header, and another man free on his own (nobody within 5 yards in the box) for the whole time the free kick was taken, to when it came to him.

We're giving away loads of daft free kicks, this normally wouldn't be so bad, but our defending of set pieces and tracking of runs is absolutely shocking, it's inexcusable. We should be able to defend the set pieces to start with, but the marking is some of the worst I've seen. We also give the ball away far too easily when we've committed players forward, and sometimes they're too over-committed for the ability we have.

My interpretation of Riley's comments was that they are much better organised, with a sensible tactical approach, leading to fewer individual errors. Team spirit under Wilder looked non existent.
They don't look well organised, or they're certainly not implementing it on the pitch.
The post above describes, but giving the ball away in daft areas with players over commited (not sensible) is not good organisation/ implementation, but the organisation of the recovery is even worse than that. But worse than this is the defending on set pieces/ organisation of the marking.

We don't seem to be zonal marking, as we leave danger zones free.
We don't seem to be man-marking, as too many of the dangerous players seem to end up standing on their own, in very bad areas.
It's not really the centre backs though, Fry or Lenihan, they seem to largely deal with their aspect, but it's the rest around that, they're all over the place, and awareness/ concentration has been terrible.

We played well yesterday though (overall), but add that to the long list of games where we should have won according to xG (we had plenty of those with Wilder too).

We have got better in the last few games. Yesterday we never looked in any danger apart from 1 lucky break. Defending was absolutely fine. As it was at Hull bar a defected goal.

And the 2 own goals at Hull would have been given to Boro players in the Premier League. Both were on target in my opinion.
So it feels like you are looking for reasons to be unhappy.

We are improving but from a low bar. I think we will finish around mid table this season if we continue to inch by inch get a bit better

The mistakes under Wilder will have been due to one, some, or all of the following - low confidence, poor concentration, tactics/formation leaving players exposed, lack of commitment, poor coaching.
All of these reflect badly on Wilder's regime.

Under the 11 games of Wilder's tenure this season we averaged less than a point a game, conceded 16 goals and scored 13. In the 8 games since we've averaged nearly 1.4 points per game, scored 11 goals and conceded 9. It's going to be a battle to climb the table but so far, in every respect, we have improved since Wilder's departure.
His utter inflexibility in refusing change tactics when clearly they were costing us was ridiculous. He just kept changing personnel which was like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

It was a toxic camp you could feel it at the ground but now we are looking a lot more relaxed and players look happier as well.
I think tavernier might of stayed another season but for wilder….seemed a strange move to bore mouth who’ll most probably be in the championship next season. Tavernier got out because someone came in for him and he could see the inside of the dressing room.
Such a shame….

that's a really good point, its sounds like the players were at odds with management by the end of last season, if you were working in that atmosphere then you would jump at the first decent offer.

Sorry Viv, about the dressing room you mean?
I mean the positivity. Fry spoke very well of Wilder, like McGree seems to like working for/with Carrick.

Dael Fry: “He doesn’t want us doing Cruyff turns but I’ve always known I could play out from the back. When I was going away with England when I was a bit younger, you had to pass through the lines and when Chris came in he told me that’s what he wants me to do now. He said he’d make me a better player and he’s done it. He’s given me a lot of confidence, this is the most enjoyable style of football I’ve ever played.”

he was promised he could leave when warnock was in charge if he stayed for one last season which he did and then left,
daft to say well Bournemouth could be back in the championship the next season, because he certainly wouldn't of even went to prem if stayed with us during that time and there is always the chance they stay up or even if they go down another prem club picks him up.
