It’s not the pull, it’s the targeting! Liam Rosenior or Joey Barton to bring in some league one gems?I think this has always helped us with recruitment as no doubt Robbo pulled in players that we’d struggle to get normally so would you like to see a kompany lampard style appointment???
If so would someone like Rooney be worth a go.
Obviously a risk but probably one worth taking. I would get behind it if that was the way we went.I see Michael carrick linked that would fit this mould and it’s a path that has worked for us in the path. Top ex player a good respected name knows the area and worked at high level coaching at Man U.
We do better with an increase of contacts.. more info on cheaper players, more chance of loan players etc etcMentioned this the other day but news that carrick is now in the frame I’d thought I’d raise this again.
As we do seem to do better with a recognised name or some with a history at top clubs at the helm.
Robbo could also pay hugely inflated wages to attract top talent.I don't think it works anymore.
Players have much longer tenures. If a player signs for a manager now, he knows that he'll be lucky to be working with him for 6 months, and he'll still have a 3.5 year contract once the manager has gone.
It worked in the Robbo era, but that was over quarter of a century ago: look how average manager tenures have fallen since then.
That’s true but with out Robbo we don’t get Juno or Rav despite the wages same got merson no way he leaves Arsenal for us without Robbo.Robbo could also pay hugely inflated wages to attract top talent.
We've discussed this to death before zorro, I am not as convinced of that as you. Merson has been asked on countless podcasts in recent times why he came to Boro and never once has he said "Robbo".That’s true but with out Robbo we don’t get Juno or Rav despite the wages same got merson no way he leaves Arsenal for us without Robbo.
Ok, but that's Beck. Those other 25-30 clubs probably weren't that much above our level. Beck was relatively highly rated before we got him but make no mistake, if one of the top Italian clubs had come in for him he was going there regardless of Robbo. It’s clear money was a factor for merson but I think Robbo tipped the balance.
Look at this from beck
“I had lots of possibilities that summer, I could have signed for 25 to 30 different clubs in Europe.
“I chose Middlesbrough because I’d always liked the Premier League and Bryan Robson had always been my hero and idol. So when I could have him as my coach I thought that was something really interesting for me to do so I decided to sign for Middlesbrough.”
