Do you talk to your dog?

I have had another heated row with my tortoise. Didn’t do the washing up last night despite being on the rota to do so. Took umbrage at the tortoise shell colouring of the new kitten.

Meanwhile the older cat, the Persian who is obsessed with Greek Philosphy, has thrown his toys out of the pram when I dared suggest the Sophists were wrong and that men weren’t the measure of everything.
Don't be too hard on the tortoise and the cat mate. We're all exhausted these days and that includes our pets. Bobby was a big fan of that 'Fatboy Slim' fella and I used to just sing to him 'Right about now, the funk soul Bobby; check him out now, the funk soul Bobby' and that used to make him wag his tail a lot and really perk up if he was in a bit of a grumpy mood, when he was getting older. I'd try singing to the tortoise if I were you but I can't really think of an appropriate song for a tortoise.

Well when he’s not in a snorter of a mood he’s quote partial to Lionel Richie so I might try Easy Like Sunday Morning at him.

The average dog understands about 150 words, they might not get sentences, but they understand tone. So, absolutely chat away to them, they love the interaction and I get more sense out of her than the kids some days.

I've done a bit of research for you and there is actually a band called 'Tortoise'. I don't really know their music but you could maybe try playing that to him when he's in one of those moods. I've got a fairly young Border Collie these days and he has even worse taste in music than Erimus74. That causes a bit of friction between us sometimes but we always try and compromise because you just have to sometimes, don't you?

thing with your tortoise is that they can live to a ripe old age.. tree like.. age.. so may need something from way back in the day... maybe a bit of George Formby

I’ll give George a go but I suspect his Lancashire accent might upset him again.

BF thanks. Me and my shell pet have had a listen to Tortoise the artist. Their biggest hit is a song called TNT. My tortoise is a pacifist and therefore didn’t like that title. And then having endured a drum solo which led to some jazz improv he started shouting at me again. I quickly turned Spotify off to keep the peace.

I do remember years ago, walking the dog, on my own, when my 2 eldest daughters were little and I said to the dog. "Look a nee naw" as a fire engine went past. The dog looked at me and said, "it's a waah waah you d*ck!"

My dog is acting a little suspiciously these days. He doesn't actually bark anymore. He just says the word 'bark' instead. I get the impression that maybe he's managed to teach himself how to speak human but for some reason he doesn't want me to know that he can do that. All a bit worrying really.

Far from worrying I’d monetise it. Quickly!

I'm not going to whore my dog out to the media mate. I couldn't do that to him. He's family. Times may be hard for all of us right now but I still have my principles.
Tell the dog to suck it up and get on the carson show!

She died 3 years back but sometimes seems to be around when you glance back from the kitchen and she's on her way for a snack, I have almost thrown something for her before realising...
Always a horrible thing to go through when they leave us. I always make a vow that I'll never put myself through that again when it happens but I always do of course. I just love the hairy, smelly little b***ds and it doesn't feel right without having one of them around.

It's only down to the good lady going through some horrible treatment in the last 24 months stopping us - we are talking about it again, and planning to look at the rescue dogs locally now she is a bit better on her feet! I've missed having a hairy interloper around - at first thinking I was being hasty and disrespectful to her memory - but then with the aforementioned treatment we needed the space for recovery.

Watch this space!

I hope that everything works out for you and the other half mate and that you do get yourselves another hairy fella eventually. I've had a bit of bad family news today myself and I'm worried sick about it and trying not to think about it and that's why I'm on here at two in the morning trying to distract myself. All the best to you and yours mate.

I really hope things are OK BF - I know the feeling and it isn't something I'd wish on anyone.
Try to stay positive, keep the music playing and live for the day - it's really all we can do!
Take care.

I’m always chatting away to my two mutts. Alfie was acquired from the car and dog shelter 9 years ago and is coming up 14 now and he follows me everywhere and has the loveliest nature. He’s a scruffy git mind and spends hours of each day licking his backside then trying to kiss me afterwards and to his credit is never put off when I tell him to feck off.

My other dog is Labrador / Springer cross though she looks and acts more like a springer. She’s a bit nuts but lovely with it and it constantly smacking her tail off anything and everything she walks by. She also has a bizarre dislike of sneezes and runs a mile when it happens. Poor lass doesn’t know what to do with herself this time of year when my hay fever is kicking in 😁
