Earthquake in NZ

Just woke to hear that there has been three large earthquakes in NZ with a tsunami warning.

Hope that our resident Boro fans down there are all well and unharmed as well as everybody else.

Latest one measured 8.0 too. That’s pretty big 😳
Sure is mate.

I was in Christchurch xmas before last and saw the enormous damage to the beautiful little city that the last
one caused over ten years ago and that was only a seven.

Fingers crossed for all.

Waiting for the surges. We should be OK down here in Tasman/Nelson, just expecting a 30cm to 1m surge, might flood some of the streets etc but not as much as they are expecting up North.

Thanks for your thoughts btw.

Think NZRed and Abel Tasman are up North.

Cheers mate, glad to know you're ok.
Hope the other boys are too. (y)

Ok up here in Northland. Im off the coast but the third quake has everybody in alert. It was 8.0 which is a big one about 200 miles North East of us. Boats told to sail to deep water. Coast dwellers told to evacuate to higher ground. Tuned into National Radio.
Observers say awell is up but so far no signs of a Tsunami.

Nah, i'm down south, but hope you northerners are ok. My brother is up in Auckland but i don't think its in the warning area.

No, two of the three quakes were 1000km north of NZ, waiting for a tsunami, but i dont think they are expecting damaging waves.
The first of the three that hit at 2 am I felt as it was closer. Friends on the West coast in Kapiti felt it. Not as big at that third quake which thankfully hit in the islands well off the coast.
Niece works in Gisburne which is at the south part of the evacuation area says there is some minor superficial damage to some buildings and road infrastructure there. Not serious. The swell is more of a concern.

Thank god that it was a 1000 k away.
One can only imagine the destruction had it been closer to shore.

Thoughts and best wishes to you all from Oz

Threat level has now been withdrawn thankfully. Evacuated coast dwellers can return home. There are still warnings out for off shore boats.

I live in Northland, the area most under threat. We were all evacuated from our town (Whangarei) centre and told to go to higher ground. The alert's just been lifted so back to work now.
We had some coastal surges in some of our seaside areas, but nothing major thankfully.
And the earthquakes of concern were in the Kermadecs, about 1000km north of NZ, so no problems with damage the quakes themselves, just possibility of tsunami.
Cheers for your concerns and UTB.
Oh and great news we've got Warnock sign up for another season.
