Energy Bills.

They're getting an even better deal now. The cost is capped!
Yeah and the conversation was about what will happen to the poorest when that cap is raised or removed. If you’ve got a vested interest in energy companies then be up front about it.
The people in this thread who suggest helping the poor keep warm are talking from an ideological and theoretical view. We know it won’t happen because the system is greedy and libertarian.

They won't be able to have any of those things soon anyway because of energy costs. We need poor people to pay less and rich people to pay more.
So if people are looking for a new energy supplier then signing up to Ecotricity is a green option with the added benefit of all profits going towards securing gas for the future.
The tariffs are more expensive but if you can afford it then you know you are doing your bit towards helping reduce bills for poor people in the future.
Hopefully this is not an ideological and theoretical view?

No Household should go cold in the winter.
Every household should have an allowance of cheap energy sufficient to keep the house warm and power the necessary devices.
Anything over that usage should be then be charged double.
If people can afford it and want to heat/power their 5 bedroom detached houses with Spin Dryers, Dish Washers, TVs in every room, Windows open with the heating on full power and people wearing shorts and t-shirts in the house with Blackpool illuminations outside then that would be their choice.
I think what you've just described is a block tariff, where usage is charged at 1 rate up to a certain number of units used then at a different rate after that (You can do this in a number of "blocks").
this is the kind of things the energy providers can do with a smart meter, and i think that as we start to see more and more smart meters adopted we'll start to see suppliers do stuff like this.
