England or Boro?

England for me, but only the "marathon not a sprint" rationale above. If it was a cup tie for Boro I might feel different.

Re: club and country I always found it pretty odd the amount of folk "dahn sarf" who only follow England and don't have a club. Met a number of them when I lived there, and it struck me as very different to how the club game takes priority for many in the North.

Boro obvo as this world cup thingy really doesn't count as far as I am concerned. An England defeat would also mean I'll be able to get a seat in the pub the following Sunday.
Ha, the other day you complained that I was suggesting the 1930-1938 world cups shouldn’t count 😁. Or at least that’s how I interpreted your comments.

Boro's season will recover from a loss, the multi year England World Cup campaign will not.

England easily . Boro can win other times , as it’s the league .

I know it’s fashionable for some to hate on the England team, but I care about England just as much as I do boro

I am English and a proud Teesside /Cleveland lad

Fair enough. Although I accept that this World Cup will, and probably should, remain on the record. I was expressing personal sentiment, that's all. Meanwhile ...

But if Boro win how long will you be excited for? It’s just a run of the mill win against a side we expect to beat at home.
I agree with this. A Boro win would have a routine feel about it, although i'd obviously be happy about it I probably wouldn't remember anything about it in a years time.
A quarter final in the world cup is a totally different beast. If it was say an FA cup quarter final for Boro then that would be a different story.

Overall Boro are the priority, but on this occasion i'd choose England, it it would give my kids something they'll always remember, just like i look back on Italia '90 with great memories.

I still think about the loss to Italy and how close we came to finally winning a trophy again.

Can't say I'm overly upset about losing to Preston now.
We won 3 days later and all was forgotten.

Boro. Not even difficult.

I'm quite surprised as to how many Teessiders find themselves as vested in England as they do. How do you manage to generate the same kind of passion for England as you do Boro?

I wonder why this question never comes up during important Boro games but during Euros and World Cups. On the morning of that day in May 2016 v Brighton how many of these I rather England win a world cup would have said same thing. I bet very few . However even on Saturday I rather Boro win. They are my team for the past 45 years every week, I watched England about 6 times live, not even in same ball park. Each to their own but in my mind not comparable. The love for this football club can not be matched by a few internationals/ Be really happy if they won it but compared to that day in Cardiff no where near

But Boro aren't in a cup final or a play off decider, they'r e playing Luton and are currently in mid table. The question is about right now. I don't think many would choose England over one of those events, that's why the question isn't asked then, but that's not the situation.

I'm not sure anyone does have the same passion for England, but the relative importance of the matches are a huge factor

Friendlies/qualifiers/Nations League I barely even watch. But a World Cup knockout match is bigger than a league match for Boro, unless something big is riding on it.

If it was Boro win the FA Cup/Premier League/Champions League its no contest. But none of those things are on offer.

I'd honestly take England winning the World Cup even over Boro promotion or another (awful) day at Wembley in the play-offs just to go and make up the numbers in the PL.

Even if Boro won promotion via the play-offs with a 5-4 win at Wembley, with 5 goals in the final 10 minutes, after being 4-0 down after the first 10 minutes, I'd still consider it one of the worst days of my life if I had to stand in one of the Wembley Way queues for the tube afterwards. Such is my hatred for Wembley and everything around it.

Basically I want us to come third every year and lose in the play-off semis 🤣

Statistics suggest I’m very likely to see boro win promotion in my lifetime again. I’ve already seen boro win a cup .

England winning a trophy is a lifetime event that I’m unlikely to ever see ever again .

So I’m the same , England trophy win over a boro promotion any time

I'm with you, I don't think we need to be too ashamed of ourselves. I've travelled thousands and thousands of miles following Boro home and away (ha even risked divorce once or twice :)) to know that my commitment to the club is and always will be fully intact. I feel comfortable being honest about this.

Though as I type, I am left wondering why we insist on having these debates in the football community, given there is absolutely no way we'd ever have to choose.

I always think there is a choice (well we can't choose but you know what i mean) though as stuff seems to balance out in football, often cruelly. If Boro get a stoppage time winner on saturday i'm convinced England would concede a stoppage time winner just to put a dampnener on it. Pessimistic i know.
