Flying Flags

In Gardens and Windows. I don’t really get it.

I understand maybe World Cup’s and big events like Royal Coronation’s (not my cup of tea but whatever).

Or even if you lived on the coast and wanted to clearly indicate to Vikings and other Sea Travellers where they’ve beached.

But 365 days of the year in your back / front garden and windows?

Bloke over the road has a make shift one. Just a massive plank of wood stuck into the ground and a Union Jack limply attached half way up. It looks proper chit, but he’s also got one in his window incase you’re in doubt about the garden flag on display.

A few minutes walk away from my house there’s a bloke who has an actual metal flag poll with the pulley system etc. Accompanied by Two Gold Lion statues either side of his front door 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🦁🦁

It just feels like a lot of effort and in some cases, money, to show your Flag how much you love it.

It depends oon the country doesn't it? In America it's expected. In the UK it has become a symbole of Brexitism and therefore bigotry.

I have jsut got back from Singapore and was surprised how flaggy they were: the national flag was everywhere

To me flying the flag means you're proud of your country, it's a symbol of national identity and you want to show off to everyone where you're from, I'm F***ing embarrassed to come from England

It’s traditionally depended on the country within the UK too. The Northern Irish on both sides of the ethnic divide have been chronic flag shaggers for ever. The Scots have been as bad for at least a couple of decades. The Welsh and English never used to do it. One of the things I found most agreeable when I first moved here back in the day. It’s a pity they’re starting.

I wouldn’t worry about it my self, unless the halliard was clattering in the wind through the night…

I think part of the problem socialism has is that it doesn’t appear to tolerate some people’s idea of patriotism…

Terms like flag sh…er (which I’ve used my self) turn some ordinary folk off socialist politics… then you have those calling ‘little englanders’ the same but furiously waving EU flags at the proms…

It’s all getting a bit silly really… 🤷🏼‍♂️

No because I'm proud to fly the lgbtq+ flag and what it represents.
People dare not object the LGBT flags but can about Union flags of any Nation. As ex-Military I fly flags/Ensigns on nominal days of the year but just for a day. As far as I'm concerned you can fly a kite all day if you so wish as I have no qualms about what you fly. However, I'm siting on the fence and just asking the question.

What about the Skull and Crossbones? Or would you need to dress as a pirate and raid the neighbours gardens for it to be authentic?

People in the Isle of Man seem quite keen on it. I suppose to remind tourists that they are no longer in the UK.

In the US it is usually the MAGA types, though not exclusively. In NI there is obviously a political point being made.

In England it is usually the Brexity types, or the staunch royalists, or both. I can't imagine anyone who wasn't one or both of those things bothering. Either way, its purely to make a statement, and I'd probably not want to get into it with my neighbour if they started doing it. I imagine ignoring it would annoy them way more than actually objecting to it (which I also couldn't be bothered to do).
