Food Market Next For Captain Cook Square

A popular Middlesbrough restaurant is behind plans to create a high-end food market and exclusive cocktail bar.

Plans have been lodged with the council to change the use of the former cafe in the latest move in the transformation of Captain
Cook Square.

Linthorpe Road restaurant The Oven is behind the venture that could see it join Level X, The Wired Lobby and Dovecot in the new entertainment zone.

The owners want to operate a high-end ground floor food market where people can sit down to enjoy an array of cuisines - including pizzas, rotisserie, a bakery, fresh pasta and breakfasts.

And first-floor plans will see a high-end cocktail bar.

A forthcoming application to the council’s planning team is expected to set out the proposals for the interior in more detail.

It’s just the latest addition to an entertainment hub I’ve driven led by the recently opened Level X.

More news soon!

High end?, I was in The Oven Christmas Eve lunchtime
Without doubt one of the worst meals I've ever been served. All 3 of us left three quarters of our meals.

Cheers for the press release, any thoughts on the thumping win yesterday?

We went to one for tea in Sheffield before the SU away game. It had a bar and various stalls of all different foods around the perimeter with seating in the middle. I went to a Sri Lankan stall and the food was unreal. A bit like Orange pip food stalls but indoors and a permanent fixture.
If it’s like that it’ll be a winner as it was great for a quick bite to eat and couple of pints.

Been once too, haven't been back.

I'm not so sure about the use of the word 'improve'. I hope I'm proven wrong but there's nothing 'high end' about the developments to me.

I like the Oven, good food at a good price.

What this press statement didn't mention is- well the original statement did, but the OP decided not to include this bit....

....This is all possible through a grant that the council will be handing over to the owners of the oven from the town center fund.

""It’s thought up to £2m worth of investment will be plunged into the scheme. The council will provide cash to the operator via the Future High Streets Fund alongside The Oven’s own financial contribution.""

Good luck to them, anything that tries to improve the atmosphere and image of the town can only be applauded. This sort of concept can be seen in modernised (gentrified if you like) cities around the world and always seem really popular at lunchtimes and in the evening.

That is F***ing crazy. Why are councils using our money to fund things like this when services are deplorable.
