Formula 1

My mistake. Thank you for the fact check.

I still feel like the sport is at a low ebb mind. Most races are just a 200m procession behind one driver.

The sport seems to be hanging on the hope that Horner will get the boot.

The tv coverage is fantastic mind. Spectacular, and worthy of a more competitive field.
That's the problem isn't it: liberty media and drive to survive have concentrated so much in making it a spectacle and bringing the frame they forgot it was a racing series. And now it hopeless at that. It seems in permanent decline at the moment. Racing so boring, then concentrating and soulless awful street tracks and getting rid of proper tracks. Piling as many races as they can in to extract maximum money from the sport.
It's not a race series anymore. It just isn't

Watched it whilst listening to the match. First time I've watched one in ages. Difficult to say which was the most depressing.
F1 one man up front miles infront of the others Boro.......
Both need a big turn around to improve their popularity.

Is it unfair though? I watched the WEC season opener yesterday when I realised the f1 was going to be the same old turgid RB rest.

They have balance of performance to keep things interesting. Equalising cars to an extent to allow clos racing. It's much more competitive though. After nine hours and 50 minutes of raving 2nd, 3rd and 4th were separated by a second and a half. It made it way more exciting than the f1
Allowing the manufacturers to build the best cars is what f1 is all about though, if you make teams start to equalise the cars then it just becomes another racing series

They already do this. Wind tunnel time becomes limited the higher you finish in the constructors' championship. But at the moment that seems only to have a concertina effect in the midfield. Let's see whether Ferrari mount a challenge at the front, as their car seems closest. Just need to iron out the reliability issues and tactical errors of the last few seasons.

I thought it was a great start to the season. Nothing better than seeing that Redbull disappear off into the distance with Max at the wheel.

You could see in FP2 that RB had the race pace no matter what the Mercs did on a quali simulation.
Do you not like competition?

Do you not like competition?

We have only had one race on a cool track. Next race might yield a different outcome. I don’t think we’ll know for sure if RB will be dominant again until we are 4-5 races in.

I’d be delighted to see Max win every race though, but would equally be happy to see some competition - it’s about time some of the others teams stepped up. Ferrari could have been closer if they didn’t like self destructing with strategy. Mercedes may well have come closer this race if they had chosen a less aggressive bodywork (according to Russell) which caused overheating.

I did note that a lot more people were looking forward to this race when they thought the Mercedes might be quicker than the Red Bulls. Would these same people be moaning if Hamilton won by 20 seconds? Calling for competition after one race? Probably not.

But, it’s only one race. Let’s see what happens next time 👍🏻

Max steamed clear and didn't even have to put his foot down. The margin to a Ferrari being 50 seconds or so. If that's not the most dominant F1 car, I don't know what is.

The thing is, they simply can't catch up though. The cost cap prevents any team doing so & the previous (soft) penalties that RB got for cheating did nothing as their car was always way ahead anyway.

People want competition, not someone running away in the distance in an OP car. These rules were brought in to give us closer racing and it's achieved the total opposite. The only thing it has done that the FIA wanted was to take the dominance away from Mercedes.

Yes, everyone was excited for the new season and hoped that someone could close the gap. That was more wishful thinking than anything.

Max will win this year and next year too.

The racing behind is actually pretty good over the last few years, but we can’t pretend people will keep watching to see a battle for 2nd place

Rb will win every race, they were almost a full second a lap quicker at points in the race yesterday. No way can anyone make that gap up over a season. And max wasn’t even pushing either, dread to think how much quicker he could have gone if he had to.

Max is clearly a fantastic driver but we will never know how good he actually is, likely will have five championships before the next rule change and four of those will have come without any challenge whatsoever

It’s never good for the sport when one driver is this far ahead, I’m sure we can all agree on that no matter who is winning. We haven’t seen anyone so dominant in 20 years, it can’t be good for the sport

As opposed to being a really boring one?

Disagree completely. Like I said look at WEC. Apart from the aero those cars are as advanced as F1 cars. More techincal innovation that finds its way to road cars comes from WEC than f1. Their (admittedly one car fewer) 19 car field has lots of different styles of car, very different approaches. The balance of performance brings the racing closer it does not stifle the race to build the best car

Red bulls superiority is a worry but let’s not pretend it’s a new thing. Mercedes won all but one of the hybrid era and so controversial was that loss many still don’t regard it as valid.

That means throughout the hybrid era every time a Mercedes went on the track they won that season championship.

The stats

117 Grands Prix (Australia 2014 - Japan 2019)

MERCEDES
6 Constructors' titles (100%)
6 Drivers' titles (100%) (Hamilton or Bottas in 2019)
86 victories (73.50%)
92 pole positions (78.63%)
60 fastest laps (51.28%)
174 podiums (74.35%)
47 one-twos (40.17%)

14-16 the Hamilton/Rosberg battle went to the wire, yes merc were clear of the field but it was always very close exciting races between those two.

2017 Vettel lead the championship most of the season, and it was close in most races

2018 close again until the last 1/3 of the season

2019 Merc dominant but 5 different winners

2020 Mercs most dominant season but still 5 different race winners

We never came close to a season like last year or what will happen again this year
