Why do formula one fans constantly talk about drivers by their first names, as though they're one of their mates ?

All this "Max" and "Lewis" stuff, you dont hear football fans talk about Johnny or Duncan to the same extent (with a few exceptions I'm sure) but it seems prevalent in F1.

I don't think it's much different to be honest. It's just that footballers usually have a nickname.

Giggsy, Becks, Lamps, JT, The Assombamonster.

What does anything on this messageboard matter?

I was making an observation and asking why it happened differently in different sports.
Probably because football players have their names of the back of their shirts and commentators use their surnames. We’re as you see more people in formula one using first name in interview and in commentary. That would be my take

There's only 10 teams and 20 drivers in F1. So it's easy enough to know every single driver and which team they drive for. As far as I know none of the 20 drivers share the same christian name. Not really comparable to football for example where there's over 2,000 professionals playing for English clubs.

I think I know the answer to this one. It's because they're are more footballers so if you used the first name it could be confused with another player with the same Christian name. But, I don't know.

You do to be fair. I tend to interchange between surname and first name. I usually call Max Max though just because its so much easier to spell. Good question though. Especially given there was a huge fuss recently about what to call Guanyu Zhou because of the way family names are usually first in China but he westernised his.

I honestly think not many people care though

I think it’s a relatively new thing as mansell was never referred to as simply Nigel and Prost wouldn’t be referred to as Alain etc.

prob in the hill era really it started as he was always Damon more for his dad comparison and Kimi was always Kimi ( he even named his book kimi) the barichello era etc

Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima
Saul Nigeuz
Allison Ramses Becker
Ederson Moraes
Neymar da Silva Santos Junior

Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira

Senna, Prost, Mansel not Ayrton, Alain, Nigel.

Gasly and Ricciardo not Pierre and Daniel...

I could go on but basically your point is flawed.

Only 20 drivers, so it's easier to know who you are talking about I guess

But yeah I agree with the above post @Randy , I don't call Ricciardo by his first name
