Future of the Transporter

I can see it being made safe as a symbol of the area, but not put back into working order.

The Tyne Bridge is a major transport artery and even that has been left as long as possible for the repairs which have recently started, so I can't envisage the money being secured to link Middlesbrough and Port Clarence.

The most depressingly possible scenario would be demolition and a close friend of Our Dear Leader magically getting the contract to take care of so much metal.

These cost estimates are getting way out of hand. First it was 2 million. Then 12 million then 24-30 million and now 67 million all in a period of 4 years

How is that even possible
Inaction ! Failure to carry out any meaningful maintenance means that it's just been left to deteriorate, so it requires more repairs at greater cost than when the last survey was done and the one before that, etc.

The money would be there in a shot if happened to be in London

Hammersmith Bridge, London

...... 20,000 cars a day, 7 bus routes, costs increased by £100M, closed for 5 years and may never open again ...

Completely agree that the Transporter should be saved.

From the article .... “The DfT are the only people that have access to the kind of money that is going to make the difference. No local authority has the means to foot a bill of this size.”

This applies to Hammersmith and Fulham, and Middlesbrough.

It should never have been allowed to get to this stage. Now that the council are almost bankrupt, who the hell is going to foot the bill? It simply cannot be allowed to deteriorate much further. Even with a crowd funding exercise you wouldn't get anywhere near the sort of money required! Very worrying times.

"Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen told the TVCA Cabinet: "I would question some of the detail in the survey to be honest"

So, he's a structural engineer now as well, challenging the report of a highly qualified and reputable company - FFS
In fairness, at that repair cost, it would be worth getting a second opinion.

if the newspaper report is accurate it sounds like Atkinson are basically condemning the bridge by saying it is beyond economic repair as a structure let alone a working transporter. By saying it is a safety risk they are also accelerating its potential demolition.

This does not sound good at all.
