GB stickers on cars no longer valid

I got stopped in the US by the police some years back for doing 65 in a 55 limit. When I showed him my paper licence he just laughed and said what the fek is this. No photo. He just said he had a good mind to put me in jail overnight as he didn't believe I would pay the fine.

Does anyone know why the change from gb to UK? Something to do with ni still being in the customs union?
 
i wonder how many cars get pulled in France for having no GB or UK sticker on? or a GB but not a UK.

i am sure their police have higher priorities than looking for cars from the UK with or without the correct stickers on.
