Government Finally Bringing in Football Regulator

Following the continued greed of Premier clubs the government has at last lost patience and is pushing through an independent regulator for football.
This is the response from the Football Supporters Association that as fans nominated representatives have been working on all the proposals for several years.

“The FSA warmly welcomes the tabling – at last! – of the Football Governance Bill arising from the 2021 Fan Led Review, and particularly its central proposal to introduce statutory independent regulation of the game.

“The regulator provides a means to intervene and stop clubs being run into the ground, protect the heritage of clubs, give supporters a much bigger voice in the running of the game, and prevent any chance of domestic clubs joining a breakaway European Super League.

“The regulator must be given the power to impose a financial settlement in the interests of the sustainability of the game as a whole; it’s far too important to be left to the squabbling between the vested interests of the richest club owners.”
Kevin Miles FSA Chief Exec.

Or Ofcom - that over the last few years has forced football to have more different viewing slots. Was everyone aware of that? It is not all down to SKY. Ofcom said that tv viewers were not getting enough football on tv and insisted there were more days/nights and matches televised.

But the good thing about the government intervention is it comes from frustration at the Premier League not doing a deal with the EFL. That fell through last week and the government and parliament has had enough - maybe just maybe the circumstances mean a regulator with teeth will be formed.

Have to agree it sounds like a complete bag of bollox.

And the cynic in me would think this finally being introduced in an election year.........🙄🙄

OFGEM, OFWAT, OFSTED.....
none of them fit for purpose. So now we have OF??? to add to the useless list.

Give it two years they will be representing the PL Clubs best interests, not the fans.

But it is being brought in because Premier clubs have not passed down money through the pyramid. I do hope it rebounds on the Premier - in election year, as you say, then every constituency will want their team to get a better deal. It could be really good timing to force the Premier clubs into a corner. And once the legal remit of the independent regulator is worked through then that could force the money from their hands.
Remember every new owner will now have to sign a licence. They will legally have commit to many undertakings including not overspending. They will assessed every year, break that licence agreement and they will be sanctioned. This is a continual fit and proper. It means new owners are being monitored and regulated.

Which is brilliant for, errr the TV companies and advertisers - not so good when your kick off gets moved to 3am on a Tuesday up the other end of the country for Mongolian telly.

I sincerely hope you are right.

I'm uber cynical when it comes to anything like this......like now, there will be PL clubs and hotshot lawyers looking at how clubs can circumnavigate any new rules

Honestly think that, like big multi national businesses, billionaires and media moguls with governments the PL owners could be too powerful for any regulator to force them to comply with anything meaningful.

But hey, let's see. I may well be shocked 👍

People aren't going to consider anything to do with football at the ballot box.

Also how do we get rid of the unfit and improper owners already in charge of clubs. The horse has bolted for many clubs

No but MPs are not going to think that. And I know for a fact they don't think that way. For instance when the Supporters Forum were campaigning around Safe Standing - every local MP got involved and backed the campaign - they all even sent their PAs to a meeting at the Riverside. Some pushed for it in Parliament. Five Teesside MPs as I recall. All parties.
