Great 90s music?

A few from my back catalogue

Primative Radio Gods. The video resolution is poor but what a song. (Originally the band name was spelt incorrectly).

And if you aren't familiar with the brilliance of Patty Griffin, this album came out in about 1996. I made the video for Every Little Bit in LA. Amazing woman. Give this whole album a listen. They recorded the songs with a band, then the record company, quite shrewdly, realised that the demos that she had recorded in her kitchen were miles better. So that's what this is. Pure writer, guitar, singer .... and what an effin voice. Her songs are best known as covered by other people ... from the (Dixie) Chicks, to Emmylou, Bette Midler, Kelly and even Susan Boyle. But Patty sings them better than anyone. This should be the whole album as a playlist.

Ocean Colour Scene - Moseley Shoals. Just one of many great indie albums from North West England in the 90’s.

The Verve - Urban Hymns. Has some of favourite tunes on that.

A 90’s album wouldn’t be complete with mentioning Oasis - What’s the Story (Morning Glory) and Definitely Maybe. What’s the Story has always been my favourite despite Definitely Maybe being preferred by most.

I assumed you probably liked guitar based stuff. The 90’s also has some excellent rap music. The likes of Dre Dre, Snoop Dog, Biggy Smalls and Nas all had legendary albums in that decade.

They’re Brummies

90s were great, American rock and Grunge RATM, Nirvana with college rock REM

UK Britpop with electric bands like Prodigy and Ashex Twin, and Europop and RAP

Basically it had the lot

Grunge is partly your man 1990's and as such a lot of bands formed in around 1987-1990 made their mark in the 1990's such as:

Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Alice in Chains
Soundgarden
Stone Temple Pilots

Rock bands like:
The Wallflowers
The Cranberries
Rage Against The Machine
Ugly Kid Joe

There's so many as well as the above but just as tasters they will do

I'm not even sure what Britpop is supposed to mean. Just seemed like another label made up by the music press to lump a whole load of bands who didn't really have much in common into an imaginary 'scene'.

Loads of good music around in the nineties and a lot of ***** too, just like most other decades.

Correct

You had a cultural scene that was changing and evolving

The 90s was probably the most musically progressive era after the 60s

UglyKid Joe still one of the best bands out there touring. Their newer stuff is a bit meh, but they do very much rock live. Shared a few beers, over the years with Whitfield Crane, as he does tend to seek out a good rock bar for a few pints after gigs.
America’s least Wanted is one of my top 5 albums of all time

I reckon it was a term used to encompass British bands with a traditional 4 or 5 piece setup with a guitar based pop / rock sound from around 1990 to 1998.

Similar to the “Brit invasion” to the 60s in the states with the stones, Beatles, yardbirds etc

Bloody love Pearl Jam.

For me, Eddie Vedder is one of the best rock front man/vocalists of the last 40 years

You can say that but I remember watching that 'Britpop Now' thing on the tele with Damon All Bran presenting it and wondering how the hell the wonderful PJ Harvey and crap like Menswear could both be 'Britpop' acts. Didn't make any sense to me.

My favourite album of the 90s is Spilt Milk by Jellyfish, fighting off stiff competition from Gomez, Radiohead, Ben Folds Five and Elliott Smith.
